This is utterly incredible.
What are some more highly detailed historical works that read like novels?
I can’t recommend this enough. It’s truly the novelization of painstaking historical research.

She has the historical facts down cold and does bring a sense of the personalities involved (Gustavus Adolphus, Wallenstein, Richelieu, The Winter King) so that it makes for a compelling narrative.
Some people criticize her for being too much of a Gustavus Adolphus fan but she does have her criticisms of his lack of diplomacy with regard to his claims on Pomerania when he should have been cultivating allies

Churchill's Memoirs and his Life and Times of Marlborough are good. The Great Game by Hopkirk is great, and gives tons more reading recommendations of colonialst apologists

I will, when I want to read a boring fucking textbook. Historians use the fact that we're reading it for college, and therefore will buy it whether we want to or not, as an excuse not to develop prose and style in their writing.

>> No.14452844

Grant’s memoirs feature lean muscular prose that influenced American modernists like Hemingway. Of course he’s going to be biased and makes himself look good but it’s great writing. It was a bestseller at the time and he wrote it while dying of throat cancer, trying to leave his family with some kind of income after he went bankrupt due to bad investments.
