I've only ever purchased an Oxford because I had to, not because I wanted to.

What painting is that? The girl looking at him in shock is cute.

Should add, not the one in the background, but the one who's cut off and you can't really see her face.

Based coomer

The ones I've got have been nicer than Penguins. I might convert.

is it just me or does the ink on these editions smudge much more easily

I had this edition to keep me company while I was laid up in a dirty hotel room in Marrakech for three days with severe food poisoning. There was a group of schoolgirls staying in the same hotel and I was embarrassed to stink up the communal toilet so I used cut-open pop bottles filled with chlorine tablets dissolved in urine as ersatz chemical toilets which I'd empty after everyone had gone to bed. I remember finding Richard Peace's introduction fascinating; his recounting of Dostoevsky's near-death experience when he was led up onto the gallows charged with conspiracy for murder, the agony he felt at having wasted so many precious moments, and, having received a last-minute pardon, went on to waste the rest of his life in a downward spiral. Gave me a lot to think about.
Anyway I definitely jerked it to that picture of Dunya more than once.

they're rare down here. penguin bought some big publisher from here a few years ago and now their classics (both english and in translation) are found in every bookstore around.

They’re definitely no Everyman’s

>> No.14450291

I got their edition of Virgil's Aeneid for Chirstmas, bit disappointed it wasn't Everyman's but I try not to care too much about the superficial

>> No.14450304

Newer Penguin Classics are superior because they lie flat.

BUT Oxford classics have acid free paper so they're better for that.

BUT Oxford classics also get grimier on the sides so there's that too. At the end of the day I usually pick Penguin unless I like the Oxford translation or notes better.

Paintings on the covers of classic books are not related to them, dummy. Publishers slap something suitable from public domain there. You really wouldn't expect anyone in the 21st century to commission some original illustrations for the book, would you?

Oxford consistently have the best translations. Penguin consistently have the worst, most blatantly contemporary cash grab translations.

I don't care about covers but Penguins are usually so ugly it would be hard to be seen reading them in public even if their translations weren't dog-shit.

Hear that Penguin? FUCK YOU!
