Is this natural for people when they get older? They stop caring? They spent their youth striving for something, reading the best of the best, and then the rest of their life reading shit from the front counter at Barnes and Noble.

My dad told me he used to memorize poems when he was young, and I haven't seen him read a book in my entire life. He watches TV and reads sports news websites.

Is nobody calling him out for claiming to read all this? Like, "the complete works of Toni Morrison" should be all you read for a year, if you're properly digesting them. His list is about what I would expect from a well-educated black American, with a touch of political flavor and Dem-establishment reading, but this seems like 2 or 3 years worth of books, not one.

I read 52 books this year, most of which of great reputation among great writers, and in five different languages.

That is a lot below my usual number, but I had to take some time off to finish Law school and pass the bar, which I did.

I do not know why Americans get impressed by Obama so much. Maybe that's because most of them have never read a book in their lives. They don't even think it laughable that Obama didn't recommend foreign titles (it is).

>> No.14435126

He's a retired president, has written multiple books himself (which are honestly pretty good, considering the genre), and probably doesn't waste hours a day posting on 4chan like most people here (who still manage to be better read than 90% of the population) I'm sure he can manage to read those books.

>> No.14435145

Yeah unlike most of these lists it doesn't seem fully curated by someone else. He probably read a lot more or perhaps didn't read a couple of these, but these were the selections.

>Like, "the complete works of Toni Morrison" should be all you read for a year, if you're properly digesting them.

Ten minutes at most, considering there is nothing to digest.

Now seriously, it is perfectly feasible to read a set of collected works in a few days. Most people who read books have done so many times in the past. I have read the complete works of Shakespeare, Camões, Virgil, and others. You can read the collected works of Shakespeare in three weeks, if you read two plays a day.

>But you won't be properly digesting them!

Nonsense. One reads books to know them and to have fun. Sometimes one will choose a particularly beloved book to study in depth, but that's an exception, even amongst writers.

Also, you cannot digest a whole book, unless you memorize it, and even then...

However, if you read a book only once it will already be enough for you to digest some passages of it.

Obama is a criminal, but he probably did read those books. That list is not a big deal, though he certainly deserves my admiration for having read all that - or for having read at all - while being, at same time, an American.

He most likely didn’t read them. Remember, Obama is still politically active, especially when compared to most presidents after leaving office. Most of the (now ex) president’s image has been carefully crafted by a public relations army. Every book, every interview, every late night talk show appearance, every speech, etc. He is not nearly as eloquent or sophisticated as he appears to be when taken out of a sterilized environment, such as when a teleprompter malfunctions, or when Obama states that he had *just* finished reading the same book multiple times over the course of almost a year. I thought people on 4chan were smart enough to see through the bullshit, but I guess not.

>>14434368
You can’t possibly believe that Obama wrote that shit, right? He’s a fucking politician, and a modern one at that—utterly pedestrian and middlebrow beyond redemption. Unless you think that Obama’s quality of writing plummeted dramatically from the time he was a mere B student at Occidental College to the time when he was elected to the Harvard Law Review (not really based on merit, nor was his tenure very productive, but I digress). Probably some literature professor wrote that in 2012, thinking he was working towards the greater good, or maybe a gifted speechwriter who didn’t sleep in his English classes.
