Herman Melville had an (abridged, editorially effaced) copy of Burton's Anatomy, and his debt to Sterne in Confidence Man is fairly well established. And the Pynchon I like most is the Pynchon of Mason & Dixon, which is part of the same tradition of satirical travel journal literature as Swift's Gulliver's Travels, not to mention Pynchon's affectation of ye olde talke. All five cover similar themes as well.

Pynchon is my favorite because the crying of lot 49 was so eye opening of a book that it still moves me. Next would have to be the Russian behaviorists Vladimir Bekhterev and Lev Vygotsky. Engels' work called dialectics of nature was so splendid that he won me over to like the old Marx and friends.

I have read it straight through 4 times.
I'm currently in the process of memorizing my favorite passages.
I hope to have the entire book committed to memory by the time I die.
