I'll clarify. In Old School, the protagonist picks up a literary journal and reads reads this.

I hope nobody saw me pick up the cigarette butt of the sidewalk, but I'm all out and getting shaky and it's a nice long one, with just a smudge of lipstick from the old bird who dropped it when her bus pulled up.

my top three-

Malboro lights- Pricey, but they got me through uni. Used to love malboro blend 27, but don't sell em in uk anymore...

golden V with red rizla and swan extra slim filters. Because i'm usually poor, and its a rugged smoke, lasts for days...

People who say stuff like "DON'T SMOKE" shouldn't be here. Not because smoking is good, but because they lack any argument to support their position. I can only assume that's a stance they were taught by television and cheap magazines, just like their parents and grandparents learned to smoke decades before. The rebels today are against the rebels of yesterday.

Saying no to cigarette, today, is more than just refusing an unhealthy habit, for it has a religious aspect to that "no". A weird leap of faith created by a previously constructed state of mind, that is just speaking through that person. In our western society, things are divided now by healthy and unhealthy, good and bad, more or less. We are not naturally perceiving our world and responding to it, we are responding to computers and calculators, that, although accurate, does not speak to complicated scenarios such as how we feel and live.

I once heard that a cigarette you smoke takes 7 seconds out of your life expectancy. And oh wow, how many calculations did it take to get to this number? How many seconds of life do I get by eating a salad? How many seconds of life do I lose by sitting here on this computer without moving my ass? Should I be jogging in the countryside eating oats right now? Health is not as black and white as this and, even though I'm perfectly aware of the down side of the cigarette, I don't count them as "points". How about mental health? The relaxation effect from nicotine, clearing our minds and tingling my hands. How about the health that comes from routine? After all, lighting a cigarette is more than just necessity or recreation, it's a ritual, just like dinner or shaking hands, an important aspect of the human experience. It seems like all that ritualistic side of the cigarette myth was taken from people's mind just to open space for a suicidal status.

The power of fire, the awareness and control of the air that goes into the lungs, the hand always occupied, if not writing, drawing, building... holding a cigarette. There is a very powerful image to it that is just delightful to experience. And those experiences are lost, when health extremists, warriors fighting for the idealistic life (what a load) grow despise for anything that is different from "the right way", a way imposed by all that surrounds them.

If one doesn't like cigarette, I say with no hostile intentions: good for you. That is the healthier choice indeed, but please realize that it's no more noble or right than the choice of the smoker.

This is just narcissism on such a basic level. You like the image of yourself smoking? Come on, health crusaders may be acting from a religious impulse sometimes, but this is not a good reason to smoke, it's a good reason to put a cigarette in your mouth and fervently pretend to smoke, because you'll get the same amount of enjoyment, and it will be healthier and cheaper. At least from this post it appears you're in love with the image of yourself smoking, which is honestly a lot worse than the occasionally reductive Western dualism, imo. Nicotine for relaxation at least makes some damn sense.

Maybe "image" was not a good word. I meant that these symbols echo in our minds when we smoke, just like we have a sense of duty towards social activity, for example. It's not about how we look like or how we feel about ourselves, it's about what we do and what we don't. Just like body language translate into emotions or how we like to read a book in an specific enviroment or at an specific time of the day, or people who walk back and forth when thinking. This is natural, from instinct and the reaction we get in our brains from the smoking process is just as natural. Those concepts I mentioned were just my guess for what attracts people to smoking, but it's not deliberate, it's unconscious.

Second hand smoke is worse than that inhaled directly by the cigarette. Cigarette butts are a major burden on the shared environment. These are two ways in which a smoker already impinges on my choices as a human being by virtue of smoking. As such, the choice between smoking and not smoking is not equal; to smoke is less noble.

>Second hand smoke is worse than that inhaled directly by the cigarette.
A bold claim that is yet to be proven. And no one here is talking about smoking next to non-smokers at all.

>Cigarette butts are a major burden on the shared environment.
Now this is complete bullshit. First because cigarette butts are minimum to the enviroment, actually most things from our daily routine are minimum if you compare them to industrial levels. It's not about being a hipocrit, but it's quite clear that while the middle class struggles by stopping the running tap water while shaving, the rich industries are wasting tons and tons of water everyday. A protest, a lawsuit and customer's demand does much more than this daily delusional grains of sand in the desert. Second, because, as said before, we all have our share of guilt about the enviroment, for there are things we don't even acknowledge that are hurting the enviroment right now. Just for being part of the system you're helping it.

Of course, this two things does not excuse for one more bad thing, one could say. But my point is not about being good or bad, my point is that people always see things in those terms! So for example, as I know that cigarette butts are bad for the enviroment, it's under my responsability to quit and to help out, right? So why are even buying packages and packages of stuff everyday? -- and most of them are not even necessary, like food -- and helping these big companies rise, creating more and more garbage with plastics and cell phone parts, chewing gum and paper? If one is complaining about a minor thing such as a cigarette butt, than all the other superfluous and harmful tiny actions should be included here too. It's the argument of a hippie coming from an urban person.

>> No.1441507

>>1441503
You should look up cigarette butts' impact on the environment. You would be surprised. The issue is not entirely with how much of the toxins are deposited in the environment, but where and how.

The second hand smoke I'm not bothered about, since it's fairly easy to put in place laws about smoking in public. The above issue on butts could be solved by banning those stupid filters.

>You would be surprised.
I know I would, kid. Those things are always surprising. Have you ever being to a dump? A really big one? I got to see one in Brazil when I was 12 years old, shocked me for life. It's just too much for us to handle, it's not a small problem, it's a huge problem. We are taking from somewhere (wood, stone, metal, water) and leaving it somewhere else, in piles and piles of things that could be used by nature, but are just filling in space. Smoke, contamined water, people looking for food in the middle of a desert of garbage. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

But since that trip, when I actually felt how bad the situation was, I try to live in a eco-friendly way. The thing is, as I grew older, it was harder and harder, I got out of my parents house, I had no money, I couldn't afford any green products, I lived with friends who wouldn't give a fuck about the environment and my neighborhood did not recycle, so it was useless to separate the garbage. So, what can we do? I started to realize this was less and less about me, not because I was running from resposibility, for I know that to do good to the enviroment is a sacrifice, but I figured how little I was in this system and how that was not to solution to the world's problems. I cannot expect everyone to make this sacrifice and I should'nt.

I don't count points, as I said. It's not about doing bad here and doing good there. But I never throw my trash in the streets, I put it in my pockets, I never even throw cig butts in the streets, because I like a clean street and I don't want to clog anything in case of a flood. But what my city does to the trash bins? Who knows.
