Just finished The Prince of Nothing book 1. There seemed to be a lot talk about spilling seed. I also feel that the world feels very depressing, or at least that the characters in the world are depressing. None of them can seem be considered a hero, or someone you'd want to know in person. I'm 30% through the second book so far; does it get better or worse?

Only self-published books I've read that had any quality to them at all were "The Written" by Ben Galley and the "Galaxy's Edge" series by Anspach and Cole, but to be honest with you I'd imagine they're acquired taste kind of books and therefore not for everyone. They're at least competently written if nothing else, but you might find them a tad derivative of better works, with GE in particular essentially being Star Wars from Stormtroopers/Smugglers/Bounty Hunters perspective(s)

its pretty decent, though it takes a chapter or two to come into its own. just a heads up, it is YA, but it doesn't give you the feeling that you're reading a YA novel once it gets going.

the african-inspired setting is a godsend for people who are bored of euroshit. even old tropes feel fresher with a change of scenery, but it helps that the author gets creative with it

Any good books that are horror-scifi or horror-fantasy? Most books of these two genres usually are not horror or scary in nature. Sure they have spooky parts or some dark themes but nothing scifi or fantasy with a very strong spook or horror factor to it. If you have Dead Space on Xbox or PC then that would be a good example of what im looking for. Or a fantasy setting where instead of some ancient evil threatens the land where armies and wizards have to fight it, its some sort of biological threat.

Im just tired of the same thing over and over again. I do enjoy it but something new would be nice.

I've never really thought about it much before but it is interesting how a lot of fantasy/ya marketing kinda relies upon forgetting/ignoring stuff that's already been written.
I'm not a type that's adverse to "woke" fiction or anything but so much of the new stuff that gets pushed by the publishing industry is much safer than the books that already exist and thus less interesting.

almost done with children of virtue and vengeance. its anime as fuck, even moreso than the original, but it's really enjoyable.

that said, the entire plot seems to be driven by the POV characters rapidly flip-flopping on war/peace out of synch with each other, and just plain fucking misunderstandings. every time one tries to negotiate, the other tries to attack then calms down and gives peace a chance only to be hit with retaliation. any time they agree for five minutes the main villain attacks and frames one of them. I can't tell if this is bad writing or just a painfully accurate depiction of how war happens

Well, I'd recommend what I'm reading right now; The Messenger by Chaney and Maggert. It's definitely in the pulpy/trashy side of things, but hey, if you like mechs with sentient AI piloted by a dashing rogue attempting to stop what is essentially the Reapers from Mass Effect, then by all means read away. Substantial is a bit trickier, and I have shit taste anyway. Can't think of any funny sci-fi either, sorry

Any western fantasy where the main character seeks strength for survival rather than to be a hero?

/sffg/, I have a problem. I've got a cast of quirky characters and a relatively normal MC, but unfortunately, all the character dynamics are working backwards. Because the MC is driving the plot, it's usually the goofy characters reacting to him rather than the other way around, but because he also knows the least about the setting, he can't act as the voice of reason.

As a result, the whole thing is just massively unfunny even though all the characters have enormous comedic potential. I'm not sure how to salvage it

It seems fine for the side-characters to react to the MC ability to move the plot forward. They are SIDE characters for a reason. But since you seem like you want more of an ensemble thing going on, you should have some of the more cartoonish characters make up for the deficients of the too straight-lace MC. This way, the MC can act as a potential collective foil.

>> No.14388302

>>14388202
So, there's a main quartet that are kind of like that. The MC, two weirdos who are also the most competent members of the group, and a third character who I'm still figuring out how to play off. She's supposed to be more timid and useless, less zany, but it's kind of hard to include her without making her feel like a load the other characters have to carry around.

Really, I think I understand how the other characters are meant to act. it's more an issue of finding ways to play out the dynamic. weirdo #1 is the more proactive, outgoing and idiotic of the group, while also simultaneously being the most knowledgable. Honestly, I know from experience she's perfect protagonist material, but she's not the MC and she's not in every scene, and to be honest she doesn't even have a lot of individual agency within the story. Putting the focus on her would require me to reconsider a lot of the story.

weirdo #2 is easier to some extent, because he's more conniving, and stays out of the focus until it's time to pull something. That said, the moving setting doesn't give him much of an opportunity for shenanigans, because it requires a certain amount of environmental control and prep time. It also means it's harder to focus on him when he needs to be the focus

The last girl is probably the only one with solid interactions. It's just a matter of making her bearable

finishing off stuff so I hit 80 books on the year, I'll post if any of it is good, probably gonna finish lies of descent and then either updraft or poppy war since I left both of those books with like 50 pages left. After that I'm gonna go back to Ninth House since that started well.
previous christmases I got really into stuff and iirc read loads of discworld and robin hobb but after the end of a year of reading lots of new stuff I'm finding it hard to get hooked by stuff.

Wouldn't call it burn out but my pace of reading fell off so hard from like October onwards after exhausting all the stuff I was really interested in reading.

Do you think that telekinesis, visions, premonition that characterized works of great soft sci-fi authors like Herbert and Dick can be married with a more science-oriented sci-fi? It always takes me out from a setting - it's not exactly psychological since it always serves quite utilitarian purpose.

Also, do you think that modern authors mainly quit on depicting it?
