Also, how do you read philosophy. Do you read like novels or does it need a more focused approach like I'm studying. Bear in mind my aim is to keep these concepts with me.

There's no right or wrong way to study philosophy. However it is recommended that you look at all angles. Some philosophies are polar opposites but can still be valid ways of life, it's more like trying to find a glove the right size for you, there is no philosophy that ever existed that was a good one size fits all. Also do read into religion since it has a lot in common with philosophy even if you have no inclination to believe in god or have any particular religious alignment.
