Hey /lit/ I'm thinking of getting into writing. I haven't read much books in the recent years, let alone finish any. Mostly just the odd fiction book here or there, but I think it would be neat to write a book and publish it one day. So should I read more to develop my "writing style" or do I start writing drafts more sooner?

Get a pen and woke paper. Write down literally whatever comes to mind in one long stream of consciousness about whatever you want. Order it later. Organize it later. Edit it later. Just belt it out by hand to start with.

If that is easy for you, write. If that is hard for you, read.

I second this method. I still think it's beneficial to read as you write though. A tip, as you're reading find the lines that really move you and then try to rewrite them in your own words, whether it's a quote, imagery a piece of poetry, it will build skills.
