I don't know about Guenon but Henry Corbin apparently was very fond of Shia Islam and I wonder why. It is certainly better than other exoteric forms of Islam, but I still don't see how someone would choose it over something like Buddhism or even Christianity.

In the SP edition of Studies in Hinduism he reviews Arthur de Gobineau's Persian travelogue and writes in his review that Shia Islam is more mystical and less metaphysical compared to Sunnism. I don't recall him mentioning it anywhere else.

I'm not as familiar with Shia esoterism, although I know there are several Shia Sufi orders such as the Bektashi, Galibi, Ni'matullāhī orders, the last of which is supposed to have some 2 million or so members in Iran. Things like Ismailism are technically offshoots of Shiism as far as I understand and have some degree of esoterism as well. Jorjani also has a video with Mishlove where he talks about esoterism in Islamic Iran and how certain types of esoteric Shiism influenced popular Sunni Sufis like Rumi.

Islam does not suit the national character of Iran. The reason Iran won't abandon Islam at the present moment is because it would unite the Islamic world against it. In fact, it might even make Christians ally even more with Islamic powers, which is similar to what happened during Byzantine-Rashidun temporary alliance.

Iran is meant to be Zoroastrian. The Gathas is a very holy text, and the rest of the Zend-Avesta pales in comparison to it.
