I believe BRANDON SANDERSON has a foot fetish. My reason for believing this is because I have a foot fetish so I pick up on things most humans do not. Take for instance the ever shitty House of Cards. Now, I do not like this show (House of Cards) but I did sit through 4 seasons of that crap hoping it would get better, and in that time I noticed numerous examples of blatant foot fan service. It is a good fetish to pander to because it occupies a gray area due to the lack of nudity, which is why its perfect for a guy like BRANDON SANDERSON. Reading Mistborn, I can't help but notice how many times we are reminded of Vin's cute bare footedness. She's barefoot on the roof, toes clutching the edge. She's barefoot on cobblestone, only to walk on marble. Vin walked to his bed BAREFOOT, making no sound. Of course the obvious explanation (for the mundane majority of men) is that Vin is a Mistborn -- a thief -- and strives to remain quiet. She has to make lots of sacrifices due to the magneto magic of BRANDON SANDERSON'S world, such as never wearing toe rings or anklets (unless they are wooden or something) but I do not believe this is the sole reason for the foot prose on display in these books. The author (BRANDON SANDERSON) has fueled my spirit with his depiction of Vin. I have a hard time getting through the pages when I keep seeing examples of her beautiful foot-based dexterity, yet its these very passages that push me further on. I see visions of Vin toying with Elend, giving her man a royal footjob that any king would crave with her expertly trained toes. I think about Vin embarrassed, painting her toe nails to match her dress while Zane watches from the window. I think about her wearing glass slippers to show off her new feminine toes at the balls! Oh what a sight to behold! I am not even on the third book so I can't begin to imagine how much footy goodness is still to come. Anyway, these are my reasons for suspecting BRANDON SANDERSON has a foot fetish.

you're an idiot on several counts. for starters, gender and sex aren't synonymous, which is common knowledge now so good job on your literacy. sex (in humans) is defined by the number of each sex chromosome, while gender is defined by the cultural associations surrounding them. even in western civilization, most cultures have historically had at least three of them: male, female and eunuch

of course, the male-female dichotomy could work for sex, except that there are numerous genetic or epigenetic conditions that can result in nonstandard configurations or expressions of sex chromosomes, such as duplication or deletion

> "No war! No war! No war!" the people shouted as Richard led the men up the street at a dead run.
>"Out of the way!" Richard yelled as he closed the distance. This was no time for subtlety or discussions: the success of their attack depended in large part on speed. "Get out of the way! This is your only warning! Get out of the way or die!"
>"Stop the hate! Stop the hate!" the people chanted as they locked arms.
>They had no idea how much hate was raging through Richard. He drew the Sword of Truth. The wrath of its magic didn't come out with it, but he had enough of his own. He slowed to a trot.
>"Move!" Richard called as he bore down on the people.
>A plump, curly-haired woman took a step out from the others. Her round face was red with anger as she screamed. "Stop the hate! No war! Stop the hate! No war!"
>"Move or die!" Richard yelled as he picked up speed.
>The red-faced woman shook her fleshy fist at Richard and his men, leading an angry chant. "Murderers! Murderers! Murderers!"
>On his way past her, gritting his teeth as he screamed with the fury of the attack begun, Richard took a powerful swing, lopping off the woman's head and upraised arm. Strings of blood and gore splashed across the faces behind her even as some still chanted their empty words. The head and loose arm tumbled through the crowd. A man mad the mistake of reaching for Richard's weapon, and took the full weight of a charging thrust.
>Men behind Richard hit the line of evil's guardians with unrestrained violence. People armed only with their hatred for moral clarity fell bloodied, terribly injured, and dead. The line of people collapsed before the merciless charge. Some of the people, screaming their contempt, used their fists to attack Richard's men. They were met with swift and deadly steel.

And in case that other one isn't bad enough for you:

Her power, her magic, was also a weapon of defense. But it would only work on people. It would not work on a chicken. And it would not work on wickedness incarnate.
Her gaze flicked toward the door, checking the distance. The chicken took a single hop toward her. Claws gripping Juni’s upper arm, it leaned her way. Her leg muscles tightened till they trembled.
The chicken backed up a step, tensed, and spurted feces onto Juni’s face.
It let out the cackle that sounded like a laugh.
She dearly wished she could tell herself she was being silly. Imagining things.
But she knew better.
Kahlan frantically tried to think as the chicken bawk-bawk-bawked.
“Mother,” the chicken croaked.
Kahlan flinched with a cry.
In the dark, the chicken thing let out a low chicken cackle laugh.
It hadn’t come from where she expected the chicken to be. It was behind her.
“Please, I mean no harm,” she called into the darkness. “I mean no disrespect. I will leave you to your business now, if that’s all right with you.”
She took another shuffling step toward the door. She moved carefully, slowly, in case the chicken thing was in the way. She didn’t want to bump into it and make it angry. She mustn’t underestimate it.
Kahlan had on any number of occasions thrown herself with ferocity against seemingly invincible foes. She knew well the value of a resolute violent attack. But she also somehow knew beyond doubt that this adversary could, if it wanted, kill her as easily as she could wring a real chicken’s neck. If she forced a fight, this was one she would lose.
The chicken thing let out a whispering cackle.
With the next flash of lightning, she saw chicken feet standing between her and the crack under the door. The thing wasn’t more than a foot from her face.
The beak pinched the vein on the back of her hand over her eyes. The chicken tugged, as if trying to pull a worm from the ground.
It was a command. It wanted her hand away from her eyes.
The beak gave a sharp tug on her skin. There was no mistaking the meaning in that insistent yank. Move the hand, now, it was saying, or you’ll be sorry.
If she made it angry, there was no telling what it was capable of doing to her. Juni lay dead above her as a reminder of the possibilities.
She told herself that if it pecked at her eyes, she would have to grab it and try to wring its neck. If she was quick, it could only get in one peck. She would have one eye left. She would have to fight it then. But only if it went for her eyes.
Her instincts screamed that such action would be the most foolish, dangerous thing she could do. Both the Bird Man and Richard said this was not a chicken. She no longer doubted them. But she might have no choice.
If she started, it would be a fight to the death. She held no illusion as to her chances. Nonetheless, she might be forced to fight it. With her last breath, if need be, as her father had taught her.

Fuck. You guys aren't gonna believe this.

About a year and a half ago I read a self-published book that I really liked. It was the first book of a trilogy, I think, but then when I went to read the other two the fag author had pulled them from amazon. Turns out (from goodreads) that this author had already published the same book like twice with different covers and titles, but always ended up pulling it. I guess he's some kind of autist and wasn't satisfied with it or something. It was a really good fantasy book, though, really liked it.

So today I was doing fuck all so I went scrolling through the amazon's new releases page, which I don't often do, and then I saw a really really bad cover that reminded me of that book and recognized the author's name. He did it again, the fucking madman! Today! And I, his only reader, just happened to see it on the day he released it. Fuck! Makes me wonder how many times he does this, for me to just be scrolling through on the exact day he releases it. Maybe he does it every other day and so it's not such a coincidence after all.

Anyway, I think you guys should all read it. I'll shamelessly promote it here so you can share my pain when the faggot inevitably pulls it from the store again before releasing the sequel (which is scheduled for january, according to amazon). It's a fantasy about elves. Elves are all a bunch of pussies that can't even handle the thought of violence, except for one, the main character. I won't spoil more than that, but it was a really well written book, I don't know how much he changed since then.

It's this with the atrocious cover, by the way. He had previously """published""" it by "Elf: Immemorial" a couple times. I don't know if he did manage to get a legit publisher this time, but it says it's published by Soteira Press, don't know who the fuck that is, maybe an indie oriented small publisher?

Vance, too ironic, wrote for money and it shows, stories are just random sequences of inane events. Moorcock doesn't know how to wrap up his stories, all collapse into farces toward their ends (his way of deconstructing the genre). Poul Anderson is just trash, and the way he shoves his politics into his stories is embarrassing and obnoxious. Robert Howard is okay-ish, stories lose their flavor after the third one or so. Gene Wolfe is more interested in crafting puzzles than in writing stories. L. Sprague de Camp is just fucking terrible. Leigh Brackett sucks dick, Marion Zimmer bradley is quirky and stupid. Burroughs is for children.

He was a self-published OG Amazon manipulator. His work was unreadable -- and I say this as someone who reads self-published litrpgs all day long. Even in audiobook I couldn't get more than 20 minutes in. But he diligently created hundreds if not thousands of sock puppet reviews, giving him (and also Harry Potter, just for authenticity) five stars. An utterly transparent combination of autism and balls.

One guy (I think here: http://conjugalfelicity.com/robert-stanek/ ) did an investigation that just makes you feel sorry for everyone involved. But for years he sat on top of hundreds of fraudulent five star reviews so there's something marvelous about him even if he can't write.

Help me, sffg. I'm trying to find a book I read about five or six months ago, although I think it was probably published either earlier than that this year or in 2018. It was a time travel novel with a female author. The main character developed this method of time travel that requires you to die while inside a sensory deprivation tank, and then you go back to the point in your life that you were meditating on while you died with the knowledge of the future. Any changes you made created false memories in people who were affected by it, and when the government gets ahold of the device they make bigger changes that affect more people and it eventually causes the end of the world, despite the efforts of the device's creator and her police officer buddy to bring things back under control. Anybody got any clues?

You get idiot tier responses because that is all you are worth.

If you need a ten page essay why mutilating yourself and LARPING as a woman is a bad idea and will inevitably destroy your life, then you are just dumb.

You are not a woman and there is nothing you CAN do to become one. At best you will be a freak which isn't openly ridiculed, because doing so has severe negative consequences for people openly voicing what everybody can see. Even if you manage to "pass" in your early twenties and can pretend to be a girl to people not looking to closely, in a few years that will change and people will see you for the Frankenstein's Monster that you are.

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of sympathy for people with these mental illnesses, which is why the people who encourage them and promote "transitioning" instead of treatment need to be locked away.

I mean, I read The Fifth Head of Cerberus recently and took some time to try and understand exactly what was going on in the story, reading it carefully and looking it up online afterward, even finding Gene Wolfe's own comments on it which confirmed by interpretation. And when I came and posted about it on here, the one person that discussed it with me did not understand the plot on even a basic level. Not the underlying themes or things that could be difficult to ascertain, but just the basic plot was incomprehensible to them. And that's because the book never explains it and just assumes you'll figure it out somehow. That's fine, I suppose, but I don't find it enjoyable. It's like I'm approaching the book as an antagonist that I have to defeat, rather than something that I can enjoy. I think it also demonstrates a failure to effectively communicate, or if not that, then an excessive preoccupation with obfuscation.

The study would be irrelevant either way. Gender is demonstrably a social construct, and anyone that denies that just an imbecile. The only thing that's up to decide is whether or not you are strict on wanting gender to correlate to assigned sex, which is a pretty retarded thing to want considering that sex itself is pretty loose and people can be vastly different regardless of what sex a medical book says they are. And then you have the question of how many genders should there be, since you apparently have a LOT of autistic trans people that think having more than a handful of genders is too much.
Personally, I'm all for expanding the language through additional gender, but I hate the fact that it all revolves around sex when it's discussed in settings like these. Of course, I could see the danger in having too many genders, since then the lines get more and more strict depending on what you identify as. So I can understand gender abolitionists too.
I've noticed that most people threatened by trannies are fags, and I'm sure many of the ones in this thread that go nuclear are 100% fags. If you ever talk to a fag long enough he will start telling you about how trannies ruined their life and gay culture and how they took over every fun place online for the gayim. It's kind of funny. It's kind of ironic how incels take all the blame for the tradcuck stuff because I feel that behind every one of these online groups, you dig long enough and you'll find a frustrated fag at the bottom that hates women and hates the idea of men turning into women even more.

Like unless you can identify some reason as to why normies would dislike it (like Bakker getting downvoted for having his only female character be a whore) there's a good chance that the book is just shit, and in Malazan's case it is just shit. It panders to just about everyone under the sun, it's the most R3ddit book imaginable, and yet normies still hated it. It has an obese sorceress, it's full of minorities, gurrl power, and all the shit that's popular now, and yet it's still despised because of just how low the quality is. Hello brainlet, I am going to do the rare thing on /lit/ and call you out on your pseudism

>Gender is demonstrably a social construct, and anyone that denies that just an imbecile.
Generally when academics denote gender to be a social construct, what is meant by this is that precisely the question you posit afterwards is to be answered in the negative, that due to the nature of gender being a constructed concept, we are able to throw away with the truth status of it as universal and can dissolve everything into an impenetrable field of relative contingencies that can be formed and shaped to our desires. The moral thing then, according to these theorists, would be to destroy the prevailing social order wrt to gender and allow for radical reorganization of our fields of knowledge according to our normative motivations.

So yes, the question of whether gender is a mere social construct is indeed of relevance and by positing the question you follow up with:

>The only thing that's up to decide is whether or not you are strict on wanting gender to correlate to assigned sex

you simply beg the question and ignore the debate which is central to the philosophical investigation of gender.

>which is a pretty retarded thing to want considering that sex itself is pretty loose and people can be vastly different regardless of what sex a medical book says they are

Which is also why your conclusion seems to be so trivially set in stone already. Whether or not sex is pretty loose, whether or not people can be vastly different and whether or not we are making use of a sensible category by using "gender" when talking about this (lack of) difference is what is up for debate.

Hello brainlet, there you are again. Identifying gender as something separate from sex is a VERY modern and recent thing. In fact up until 40 to 30 years ago the question was never raised. During second wave feminism gender essentialism was considered part of a radically progressive agenda and the female essence was considered to be central to the feminist movement. Since you mention history books, I would like you to inform of the Ancient views on gender, such as they are exemplary found in Aristotle, according to which the soul of a person was gendered according to their physiology and was in fact a natural part of a person – speaking of "feminine men" as Aristotle did, does not mean that there is a gender role of a woman which the 'biological' man takes on, but rather that the man is in his nature tending towards the feminine side. This view of sex was fairly consistent up until a few decades ago and in fact was very popular in sociological, anthropological and philosophical circles during the late 19th and early 20th century and for example used to explain phenomena such as homosexuality.

Empire of Silence is the beautiful and inspiring story of an author making a good chunk of money by shamelessly ripping off Dune and Name of the Wind.
If either of those things sounds appealing to you by all means read and enjoy, but don't expect /lit/ cred or anything.

Correct, but the comment about being pissed off was made in reference that first book, Wizard's First Rule, the first book in Terry Goodkind's epic fantasy series The Sword of Truth.

I could understand not being happy about the political subtexts (though they are blatant enough that it's hard to use the prefix of "sub") that exist in the other books, Wizard's First Rule, the first book in Terry Goodkind's epic fantasy series The Sword of Truth, seems rather innocuous as a whole, save for perhaps the Mord Sith torture which may have been given too much room in the book. The only egregious political allegory I saw in it was the bit where the farmer was speaking to the evil queen, which was very short, if blunt.

Not sure if I'm in the right thread for this, but I've been thinking about starting a writing project.

I want to build a sci-fi universe that's set during a time where humans are capable of interstellar travel, mostly focusing around things like colonial expansion, interplanetary politics, war, the balkanization of spacefaring humanity, and first contact/war with an alien species.

All boilerplate sci-fi material, I know, but I want to put it together in a format like wikipedia - have pages dedicated to specific military conflicts, timelines of planets, persons of interest, etc.

I'm not sure if it would make for good storytelling, but I'm definitely not the only person who spends hours getting lost in a good wiki trawl. Any thoughts/opinions on this?

Edmund Hughes write some above average stuff as well (but I'd avoid windrunner).
The cleansing flame by J.A. Hudson, it's another pen-name from the guy who wrote the crimson queen, which became pretty popular as far as indie books go.

No, you don't need to read previous books. Yes, Sanderson is as bad as they say.

I have only read Way of Kings and I won't be reading anymore from Sanderson. The book is 800 of filler (including flashbacks for fuck sake), then 200 pages of reveals and twists, most of which I disliked. I thought that the voidbringer reveal was exceptionally awful. The MC for the first book is a mixture between the guy from Gladiator and Jesus Christ, and he is devoid of any semblance of a personality. The actual prose is very basic and a large portion of the book is filled with cliche conversations that are completely unnecessary. If you cut out the flashbacks and trimmed down the rest of the book, it would be a 6/10 read, the actual book is about a 2-3/10.

Bakker seems to consider himself WAY smarter and deeper than he actually is and as a result is prose is turgid without being rich, boring without being vivid and pretentious without being layered.

I think the series peaked with Faith of the Fallen. I've had some satisfying faps with fantasies of what I'd like Kahlan to do to me desu.

I'm rereading the Licanius trilogy to bring it back to current memory, now that the final book has been released. Have you read it? It's a pretty good read, though it drags in places.

He's not wrong. The sort of fantasy /sffg/ likes is different from the sort of fantasy that sells.
The fact that our brand of fantasy got ejected from the Hugo's and there was little to no outcry from the fans (at least, none that wasn't immediately accepted by all the proles as sexist and racist and misogynist and basically all the ists) should tell you all you need to know.
Why do you think every anon here recommends books that were written thirty to forty years ago, by and for spergs?

Sounds like you're the mentally challenged one, son. For a series written by a self-proclaimed feminist, I haven't seen so many women fuck up so consistently and to such great lengths.

If you care about what normies like you are idiot and your opinion is totally worthless.

The quality of a book isn't determined by it's review scores.
