Education no longer has a humanist end or any value in itself; it has only one goal, to create technicians.

This is by design in much of Europe, more than anything in STEM. Does NA not preserve its tradition of liberal arts?

>> No.14329653

No, you're wrong. Universities are making students stupid with liberalism and identity politics, AND putting them in deep debt that can't be paid off since there are no tenable job opportunities for liberal arts and humanities students. The better option, especially for men, is to get a trade or a practical job of some kind and enjoy media like film and literature during time off.

NA thinks that liberal arts are racist and sexist and homophobic, so instead of Shakespeare and Homer kids get to study tranny-lit instead

Is the Hobbit worth reading as an adult? Tolkein seems pretty sensible with regards to his politics but I have never actually read him.

If this was the goal they would make you take economically useful majors.
The goal is to en-debt you for life.

How do you PROVE that Shakespeare and Homer are worth reading? That sounds like an essentialist value-judgement to me. The purpose of modern criticism is to analyze through the lens of proper points of view, e.g. feminism or Marxism. That is the only reason why we should still be reading Shakespeare.

The value of Shakespeare and Homer are axiomatic at this point, their influence in western culture is massive and you cannot understand western culture without them. In a very real sense, even if they had no intrinsic value, they would because they've been considered valuable for hundreds of years. Of course both are works of the highest art, which is why they have been considered valuable in the past. Modern criticism is the artistic equivalent of bureaucratic busy work, it is less than worthless and only exists to further itself through inbreeding.

Perhaps, but if you read Tolkien for the political content you will probably be disappointed.

by avoiding teaching these things (Homer, the Bible, etc.) in lit and history curriculums, they are dismantling the very framework we need to have any meaningful understanding of western pre-modern or early modern literature. It's the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage by slow forgetting. There is a place for a more global focus on lit in public and higher education, obviously. But it doesn't need to be at the expense of the textual toolkit you need to understand the last ~2500 years of western literature and culture.

Why are "the last 2,500 years of Western literature and culture" worth privileging and studying? It spent all that time oppressing women and minorities. Now that the new generation are choosing to put it aside in turn, it cries out at the unfairness of it.

You answered your own question, it is those 2,500 years of western literature and culture that brought about liberalism for women and minorities. It is quite literally the salvation of non white males, it absolutely must be studied.

The American education meme exists for a reason. It's based on the old Prussian model, designed to create serfs who are capable of accomplishing technical tasks but not be able to think for themselves and be unquestioning towards authority.
