I've known 7 people who were in the military. 6 of them were alcoholic losers who I wound up cutting out of my life because once they got out they weren't even functional members of society.

The 7th is one of the 5 people I admire most in my age bracket and would willingly follow into combat. He's an alcoholic too, but he admits it and actively deals with it in an adult way (i.e. avoiding booze).

Having been in the military, I can confirm that there's a lot more reading going on then you might think. Put someone on duty for 24 hours with nothing to do but tell the drunkest to go to bed and eventually they'll pick up a book. SNCO's and Officers don't care because at least you're not sitting on your fucking phone, or they're reading too.
The Marines have a designated reading list, but it's all mostly patriotic, nationalistic, gung-ho type stuff, but there's not a "banned" reading list. Some of the best conversations I've had about lit have been in the military. The only people I've met that have actually read Marx/Engels have been low-level enlisted. I've had discussions on Buddhism, philosophy, communism, anti-war, Politics (right, left and center) and the occasional classic with other service members. Going to college was a huge culture shock specifically because of how few of the uni kids hadn't read a single thing outside of their curriculum.

The army is fucking boring, and you need some kind of entertainment to make it bearable. This has been true across all cultures for millennia. Even the soldiers guarding Jesus had dice with them FFS. Orwell mentions two guys in a trench getting into a fistfight over half of a pulp novel because there was nothing else to do.

University keeps you too busy to be well-read. "One of the benefits of graduating is that I finally had time to sit on a log and read a book" (Ed Abbey). You go to university for (best case) higher quality instruction or (worst case) a certificate of brainwashing by the establishment.

I haven't read too many books by enlisted men; Jarhead was my favorite. The Chosen by Jerome Karabel is a good example of bureaucrats trying to use college to breed a new herd of suck-ups. Ed Abbey's memoirs are a good example of someone who had a bad time in the military but enjoyed college.

No, American Universities suck. Pretty much only Engineering and Math are even viably legitimate. For everything else, it’s 90% political garbage jammed down your throat and the 10% of real study is a shallow hodge podge of too many sources to get anything of value out of it. It’s not complete garbage, but it’s mostly workforce education, political indoctrination, or debt-slavery trickery and if views that can be construed as anything other classically liberal or progressive aren’t tolerated well.
