Have a look at his letters collection, 'The Best of Myles', if you already haven't of course. He wrote under the pseudonym Myles na Gopaleen in the Irish times and was particularly scathing about Irish politics.

Supposedly he a very strict catholic upbringing and The Third Policeman tries to encapsulate that, i.e. the theme of purgatory etc. He's a definately a 20th century great though.

Read some plays Caps. Oedipus trilogy, Shakespeare maybe but he's no fun to read imo. Heart of Darkness, Jungle Book, Invisible Man (both), Phantom of the Opera, short stories by Maupassant.. All classics, all books people mean to get to some day but haven't yet bothered with, all relatively short.

Have you tried out any Lord Dunsany, capsguy? It's fantasy and all, but it's sufficiently old enough for you and written by a guy. His stuff tends to be pretty short too. And most of it is available easily on Gutenberg.
