After having read this, I still have no idea what's stoicism.

What actuallyare stoicism, epicureanism, and cynicism?

For a more thorough discussion of Stoicism, read Epictetus's Discourses. Unlike Seneca, he was a lecturer and his discussions were aimed to students. Seneca writes assuming you've the basics of Stoicism down. Then, to see an actual student reminding himself of the teachings, read Marcus Aurelius's Meditations, preferably alongside Hadot's The Inner Citadel.
If you're lucking for more beginner-friendly introductions, read: Robertson's Stoicism and the Art of Happiness, Farnsworth's The Practicing Stoic, and Salzgeber's The Little Book of Stoicism.

No shit, you just read some dudes letters. Get the Oxford World's Classics Epictetus book; read the enchiridon for the how, the discourses for the why.

>> No.14292017

Epictetus wrote after Seneca. Seneca was not writing in wake of Epictetus, rather Epictetus has the most rigorous body of work.

Cringe. don't listen to people who link to reddit.
>>14291980
Do listen to this guy. The Oxford Epictetus + Seneca's Letters + Aurelius is the ultimate Stoic library. Oxford's collection is great, but the edition places the Enchiridon at the back, and the discourses at the front, when the discourses are much longer and denser reading material when understanding the philosophy.

Stoicism = virtue is necessary and sufficient for happiness. It is the only good. Pleasure, material wealth, etc are neutrals. They won't make you happy or unhappy. But your desire for those things can make you unhappy. You should do nothing for the sake of pleasure.

Cynicism = virtue is necessary and sufficient for happiness. It is the only good. Pleasure, material wealth, etc can reduce your virtue. So, you should avoid them and instead live a simple and austere life, where you depend on nothing.

Epicureanism = pleasure is the good. Pain is the evil. But the greatest pleasure is the complete absence of pain. And you can only achieve complete absence of pain and have the greatest kind of pleasure by having virtue. So, in order to be happy you should live a simple and austere life, where you spend your time discussing philosophy with your buddies.
