These answers are all basic af. Misery isn't only measured in how precise the diction of their pain is. It's also in how destitute their lives are, the pragmatic misery of a man who truly has nothing and no one. Protagonists of Russian novels are literate, eloquent, men about town, involved in complex social affairs and romances. Their language is miserable, and they delve deep into psychological torment with their descriptions, but there are much worse situations to be in, much poorer, lonelier, all-round deprived lives than theirs.

The main char is basically a Chad though as even when he’s literally starving he still unwittingly seduces random aristocratic women. And no wonder too, since if a person can’t see into their head like we readers can he may appear as some gaunt and mysterious figure. It’s a kind of Bohemian misery that seems attractive to people on the outside anyway, there are characters who lack even that distinction

Not really. Truly miserable people do not want to inflict their misery on others, especially out of undeserving spitefulness. Often the most miserable are the kindest. Let's face it. The Underground man had a pretty good life, civil servant job, and so on. All his misery was his own fault.
