Is Zadie Smith /lit/?

>> No.14267431

She seems like a nice lady, but I seriously doubt there's much literary merit to that novel as it was written when she was 24 and has a shallow premise.

Yes she is

Pynchon wrote V. at 26. Not trying to compare Zadie to Pynchon just saying I don't see why age is relevant.

Also plot is pretty independent of literary merit.

>> No.14267465

based purely on /lit/ shitposts and not on any reading of her fictional work, I'd say: yes

And that's not considered one of his lesser works and most Pynchon fans say don't bother. It's been close to 2 decades and she's written 3 novels all less-received than White Teeth.

>>14267467
It may not be his master piece but it still has literary merit. I don't think it's fair to say "most" Pynchon fans say don't bother.

1. I have never seen anyone say “don’t bother” with V.
2. It is basically a prequel and certainly a companion piece to Gravity’s Rainbow
3. It’s pre-“Pynchon lite”
4. It’s a really good novel

White Teeth is definitely lit, but maybe not /lit/ because it's written by a woman and people on this board (and site, let's be honest) hate women. I consider it just as good as Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections or DFW's Infinite Jest (albiet with different form and different aesthetic). Her character development and her prose style on a sentence by sentence basis is staggeringly impressive.

>> No.14268846

Is White Teeth worth it? Been putting it off since I bought it on kindle a while back.

>> No.14268852

>>14268846
Yes. 100%. To me, it's like asking if Emily Dickinson's poetry is worth it. Zadie Smith is one of the best post WWII British fiction writers ever.

post a quote that you consider "staggeringly impressive"

>> No.14268861

"If religion is the opiate of the people, tradition is an even more sinister analgesic, simply because it rarely appears sinister. If religion is a tight band, a throbbing vein, and a needle, tradition is a far homelier concoction: poppy seeds ground into tea; a sweet cocoa drink laced with cocaine; the kind of thing your grandmother might have made."

Dude, I'm not going to keep posting my favourite quotes from White Teeth, at three in the morning, to prove to you that it's a novel worth checking out (and that the novel has been added to the Western Canon by various other literary scholars). It's a fantastic novel that blends that New Sincerity DFW philosophy with Franzen's realism. Check it out for yourself

"keep posting" bruh i asked for one more quote, the last one is very short and the sentiment behind it is tendentious. and what's with this suggestion that "a sweet cocoa drink laced with cocaine" is somrthing my grandmother might have made nigga my grandmother is not a drug addict

now i look on amazon preview and realize that this book is through-and-through middlebrow slop:

>"When he slipped in and out of consciousness, the position of the planets, the music of the spheres, the flap of a tiger moth's diaphanous wings in Central Africa, and a whole bunch of other stuff that Makes Shit Happen had decided it was second-chance time for Archie."

i shouldn't need to explain why the last clause is an atrocity against the english language. "stuff that Makes Shit Happen" "second-chance time" lmao this is staggeringly impressive? i knew this bitch was fake when i saw interview of her where she said she didn't finish a tale of two cities, which is ridiculous to start with because a tale of two cities is one of Dickens' easiest novels to get through; moreover it suggests that she hasn't read much else by him, maybe oliver twist and great expectations, which is unforgivable in an English writer. here are the fruits - painfully lowbrow turns of phrase likes she's writing a blog or a forum post and doesn't give a shit. No second-chance time for you from me Zadie.

Here's another stinker on the next page:

>"Mo was the only man in the community who truly understood. He was feeling really very Zen about this - very goodwill-to-all-men - until he spotted Archie's car."

"feeling really very Zen" pardonne moi while I go scratch my eyes out with a dull razor

not finishing tale of two cities is understandable. it's the worst - certainly the least dickensian dickens. you're argument-by-implication is also thoroughly wrong. she's talked extensively about other dickens books, particularly bleak house. her is a confession made obviously in the vein of franzen's "mr. difficult," something you might know if you weren't such a dick. heaven forbid you admit to ever finding a classic less-than-stellar. on that note, before you rip on smith for not knowing dickens and her "Makes Shit Happen" clause, read dickens on the circumlocution office.

i'm no huge fan of zadie smith, but it'd be nice if you retards at least learned to read before mocking your betters
