Fellas, if you had to teach high-school English curriculum, what books would you pick?

>> No.14219198

If I had to teach high school I'd fucking kill myself because I'd be surrounded by prime teen pussy with bodies still made of perfect baby fat enhanced by early puberty caused by bovine growth hormone in everything and wearing slutty kali yuga clothing that probably deliberately shows off their camel toe at this point

EVERY girl under the age of 18 who isn't a fat sow or some kind of genetic defect is now hot because of makeup and sluttiness, they're basically preening themselves like prostitutes from age 13 now so they know how to enhance every secondary sex characteristic, and their bodies are absolutely perfect at that age. Have you ever smelled a 17 year old girl's pussy and asshole after she's spent 8 hours running around on a hot day? It doesn't even smell like anything, they're physically incapable of smelling bad at that age because God WANTS you to impregnate them.

I would be smelling every chair in that building that a juicy perfect teenage girl ass had sat on, every day after every class, until the administration found out and burned me at the stake.

love this question!
i would totally skip the great gatsby.. ugh! i don't know why it's such a favorite of english teachers. here is my curriculum:
a room of one's own
start it off, set a tone, empower everyone in the class to feel like they can feel a strong voice, learn how to make an emphatic argument, and feel excited about passionate writing.
the odyssey
jump right in. desu, i'm not sure what a lot of you may think about this, but i think the emily wilson translation would be great- really bring it close to their understanding, so we are talking more about the resonating rippling power of amazing story and patterns of life.
the things they carried
do a little sad war stuff, get some historical context in, i just think this one is nice and ties in with the theme - story-truth is truer sometimes than happening-truth.
the lady of shalott
i just think this is such a beautiful poem... i want to share its beauty.
the alchemist
man's search for meaning
these two together- or maybe we just do the alchemist and i recommend the frankl for anyone who was particularly interested by the alchemist. beautiful books. things i would want to pass on to my students to hope they would feel a little more equipped in a difficult world.

Homer/Hesiod, Socrates/Plato, A short collage of the Stoics, Key books of the Bible, Beowulf/The Volsungs Saga(I read this in year eight and enjoyed it greatly), Volsupa/Havamal, key chapters of Wolfram's Parzival, Perhaps Shakespeare's Macbeth here(if nothing better could be thought of, considering his use of language can be difficult at times for teenagers and often results in a many years long distaste of Shakespeare and literature in general if the teacher has done poorly), The Sorrows of Young Werther, Faust I(would not be mandatory to read along in class as it would be advised to do so at home as to find the greatest appreciation of it possible), as well as a complete in-depth history of the Western Canon involving reading excerpts from various figures such as Aristotle, Augustine, Schopenhauer and the likes. All while also giving them a brief music/art history from the basic Babylonians to the Greeks, to the Renaissance, to the Baroque(teaching them basic ideas like Polyphony/Monophony), to the Classical, and finally to the Romantic ending with Wagner, and listening to it as they go. This musical/art criteria would be entertaining and easy serving to fill in the gaps of it all, a casual thing that the students would learn to enjoy. They could pick their own historic art period to write a brief thesis on as example, having multiple free lessons to focus on this project with the option to walk around/leave the classroom while doing so.

Mainly works that are historically important, as well as setting up a strong moral ideal and aesthetic appreciation. We teach them the effectual relation and importance of these works to human nature/the Good, regardless of whether they remain literally true: e.g. metaphysics. Give or take a few books of course, this should be the perfect high-school English curriculum.

And another thing: we would also put greater focus on the own individuals appreciation and interpretation of the works(within the obvious moral guidelines of course) rather than a confined technical system. There would still be essays and the likes but relying a great deal more on creativity rather than memory. An example I could think of during my high school experience was this:

There were multiple "motifs" that the teacher outlined for us within Macbeth, and we had to learn all of them. Things as basic as "the blood Macbeth is seeing on his hands is representative of his shame", or "sleeplessness". Completely departed from any moral doctrine or ideal and so only resulting in a meaningless identification. As I said in high school at the time I also say now, "they define Shakespeare without understanding him". This is the result of a students experience with this type of teaching. Furthermore we had -- this is all after reading a "translated" version of Shakespeare I might add -- on the day of the test a random question which would be asked revolving around one of the motifs. We had also had to prepare by memorising certain given or individually chosen lines of Macbeth and explain how they enforced the motifs given, while all under the main question of the test. I believe my question was something about how the motif of chaos relates to night time, something very basic like that. But unable to make any sort of individual expression within it all. We had our question revolving around a motif, our quote, how this quote enforces something in relation to that motif, written in the context of an essay; introduction, thesis, paragraph etc etc. Relied completely on memory and no emotional understanding from the student which, being of course an art form, is the most important and primary experience one should have, not the explanation of that experience primarily(obviously).

The test would still be within the essay criteria still, but focusing on the students ability to understand content(that includes varying levels of vocabulary and the aesthetic appreciation), as well as his/her own ability to write/create. Not necessary but would be advised to students to use their vast history of the Western Canon.

And I almost forget, see that large gap in the reading curriculum between Shakespeare and Goethe, we would instead of finding some piece between the two time periods instead read both in that order allowing for greater room at the end of this Western Canon for the appreciation of ones own Nations Literature. The students would be able to see it in light of its massive history, its deserved value and its obvious nationalistic over exaggeration of it. And by this process the true unique authentic value of the work and by that ones own country spirit. For myself -- being an Australian -- it would be Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson.
