When Yahweh engaged in Creation, he made the Jews. The Jews are people. He then made goyim, who are a slave race created explicitly to serve the Jews.Goyim are notbpeople. Historically, Yahweh is just one of many Semitic deities, and had a henotheistic following among a group of Canaanites. Historical processes resulted in this group continuously gaining power, and performing historical revisionism to "fix" history as they saw it (Ezra rewrote the Torah, for example). Obviously Yahweh "chose" the Jews, the same as Dyeus-Patr "chose" Europeans: the deity comes from the people, so of course there's an innate connection.

I used to think this way as well, but as I grew older and emerged out of my Jewish family and community growing up, I rejected it. While the blueprints for a decent faith are there as you say, the conditions of the world and our history have changed things. One has to look at the reality of a functioning culture, not just it’s written word to glean the quality of its character.

As a Jewish child you are taught from a young age that the whole world hates you (which is admittedly honest), but there is no strong action, no call to rise above the hatred, no moralistic overcoming to be better than it, only that the rest of the world is to be your enemy in response. They are the other, not you. Combined with the belief that Jews are superior to all others, this forms an incredibly toxic worldview of hybridization between superiority and inferiority, and a sort of cognitive dissonance I am not sure how to describe.

Take my mother for example, my liberal east coast Jewish American mother, descended from Russian-Polish Jews (my father as well, sometimes I wonder how inbred we are) going back as far as history can. I remember asking her when I was young “mom, why are Jews so successful?” She thought for a moment, and then pointed to her temple. “Our minds” she said, with such conviction. So I asked her if she thought we were superior to other races, and her eyes went wide with confusion. “Well...” she wanted to say it, but at the same time she wanted to teach me otherwise. She had no answer.

To be Jewish in the modern world wether you at orthodox or reform is to be confused as to what you are, what you value, and what you want. It is to hate the rest of the world and be hated back. But I do not want to be this way. I want to connect with the people around me. I study anthropology and build anthropological documentaries for a living. I want to understand other cultures and worldviews, and all he things they have to teach. But to do so and be an active participant in the world, I must reject the toxicity of Judaism. It’s an island of pointing fingers, and I want no part in that.

I feel much better for it, but the cultural void in between is a strange space to navigate. Never identifying with the WASPy New England surroundings I grew up in, while being rejected from my native culture for asking it to improve is a difficult thing. The first cracks began to form when I was 8 years old, and witnessed my cousin’s bris. Watching his suffering and seeing it celebrated with smiles and food and drinks by my elders shook me in a way that I cannot describe. It goes against everything else they taught me. This further deepened when I had my Bar Mitzvah at 13. I studied the texts for months, learned how to read them, and sit them. The Torah portion chosen for me to memorize and recite was based off of my birth month. In the story it told, a farmer is punished by God for harvesting and consuming meat from an unskilled animal. God punished him for making it suffer. I remember sitting at my dining room table and breaking down over the words, as I thought back to my cousin’s dissection at eight days old, and of course to my own. Even as a child I read that and asked myself “so in the eyes of Adonai, am I less than an animal? Is that what a human life means to us?”

Another fissure formed when I was 12. At Hebrew Sunday school there was another older kid who was about twice my size. He had behavioral problems and beat me within an inch of my life. However the synagogue did nothing, because his parents were wealthy benefactors who gave them lots of money. Many other incidents like this occurred with him, and other children were injured, but the Rabbi did nothing. They donated a new bimmah. My father was furious and we broke from he synagogue. I remember driving by that temple after my family stopped practicing there, and seeing a banner up across it “believe in the victims of Darfur!” Hypocrisy. All this, and many other things.

When I look at myself I feel uneasy, because I know that my own morality and sense of self is shaped by the Jewish life and law Ingrew out of, but I refuse to hate myself for it. I did not choose this. I believe now in my own power to overcome that. I am not what happened, I am who I choose to be, and I can extract and internalize the good elements of Jewish philosophy and call them my own while ejecting those that do harm to others.

I’ve since gravitated towards Taoism and Native Transcendentalism, and I’ve lived and worked with the Navajo, Hopi, and Tewa down in New Mexico. We’ve collaborated on a lot of projects together, cataloguing the meanings of their varying textile arts and glyphs together. I think those people, their connection to nature and how it grounds them is good. They are a more wholistic model of what a desert-dwelling culture ought to be. I refuse to live in destain for all humanity. I am still Jewish, and I will always be Jewish. It’s just time to enact that challenge for change upon ourselves, and to be the people we want to see in the world.
