Gardner's Art of Fiction (I know lit hates it but reading it made me feel for the first time like I could write a good story)
Moby Dick

Seriously, Bukowski is one of the greatest.

Yikes my dude. Also I've noticed that only a certain breed of people can appreciate Bukowski. He's to raw, rough, and truthful for people who grew up coddled or haven't lived a very full life. Honestly, if you haven't experienced some variety of crushing hardship in your life, you just won't understand Bukowski or his writings.

This is why most women don't understand Bukowski.

as a professional technical writer i'm going to say Steve McConnell
his book Code Complete always seemed to me to be the kind of writing i should aim for. clear and actually enjoyable to read, but also practical and directly usable by the audience.
the only negative thing about it is that it is way too long. he could easily have split the material over two or three books.

Irvine Welsh. Trainspotting got me into reading seriously. Filth, Marabou Stork Nightmares and Reheated Cabbage cemented him as one of my favourite writers. I wish he was talked about more here
