How did you react when you found out your favorite childhood book series was written by a team of ghostwriters?

I remember ruining the Warriors series for this girl I worked with after telling her that it was written by 4 women under a collective pseudonym.

Is this about Animorphs, OP?

Nancy Drew wasn’t my favorite, but it was a surprise to learn
My favorite books as a kid were Alex Rider and the Gatekeepers, both were written by Anthony Horowitz

I had to unfetter some pretty unrealistic ideas about what a career author is capable of on their own.

As I recall the Animorph books came out monthly. To a child, the course of like 5 years is a lifetime so it seemed plausible that 1 person could churn all that out themselves.
But after getting real work-world experience. I realized their scheduled must have been -write it in a week, maybe less- so it had time to be edited, approved, printed, and distributed.
Possible for a children's book, I guess. But not something they could do continuously for 5 years.

It wasn't.

I don't think ghostwriting is bad. But I'm suspicious of people who claim they don't use ghostwriters. Or they say something like "I collaborate with my wife". Like
for PR reasons they're afraid to use the word "ghostwriting".

Brandon Sanderson says he doesn't use them. but he has written so much. On top of raising a family, teaching classes, podcasts, Staying on top of what everyone else is writing. Participating in writing groups. He's got be neglecting something.

According to Wikipedia KA Applegate wrote the first half and the final two in the series, the rest were ghostwritten.

Imagine calling an activity an “art form” when most of it can be outsourced and your audience wouldn’t even know.

yeah RL Stine is a real piece of shit for that

I found out that my two favourite book series from childhood and adolescence were plagiarisms of other books. It was terrible.
