What about it was uninteresting to you? I don't remember it being a particularly engaging read to me back in, like, HS (which was the first and last time I read it), but I also don't remember it being an overly-long piece of work. Did you finish reading it? It's pretty established "canon," so I couldn't imagine that reading analysis beforehand would really spoil the experience of reading it too much, since the themes behind it are probably far more interesting than the prose.

Fitzgerald is a mediocre writer, the story is marred by nick being such a boring and underdeveloped narrator
It only gets good when nick starts showing a bit of personality near the end

No, Nick's attempt at trying to be an objective narrator is what's good about the book. He idolizes Gatsby and tries to portray him as "Great" however if you take the events objectively, you see Gatsby is anything but that. The Great Gatsby is a great showcase on how to do an unreliable narrator subtlety in a modern text.
