I don't know how many of them are true, but I'm guessing the art of good insults comes from being able to criticise people as well as abstract concepts more than using grandiloquent language to make someone look dumb. Being able to formulate an unexpected conclusion and articulating that conclusion to the opponent is probably some of the art of insults but I don't know, I'm speaking shit off the top of my head.

Close observation is key to good insults. People will often throw insults that they themselves would find insulting. So if they say you're ugly, their sensitivity is towards their physical appearance. If they call you stupid, they have a sensitive spot on their own intelligence.
It's not as simple as simply going "no u" though. You have to look at what they're wearing for example, what do they dress to cover, and what to emphasise? And listen to what they say, what topics do they look confident on, what do they avoid? Now, just because someone is confident on a topic or part of their appearance doesn't mean it can't be a weakspot, it can be a more devastating target if you manage to land a hit, to the point where a well landed insult that breaches a self confident area can have wider ramifications on their entire life.
