Is it worth reading Les Miserables if I already know the story from the musical, or shall I just stick with the songs? What are the major differences between the source material and the adaptation?

The film and stage adaptations are abridged, so you are missing something.
How many books in your backlog at this point?

I don't really have a backlog to speak of.

Well, unless you plan on learning French sometime in the future, I say read it.

Read some of his plays and when you become bored drop him instantly.
Hugo's cringe.
Best work is quatrevingt-treize.

Putting aside the hundred page tangents on the Battle of Waterloo, monasteries, and the sewage system, there are some kino plots the musical doesn't cover like Valjean hiding in a coffin and having to escape when things go wrong. The way that Valjean leaves Marius and Cosette is also more drawn out and, imo, more emotional than the musical (and the 2012 movie had me crying in the scene where Valjean was dying.)

>> No.14142924

It's great and bloated at the same time. Half the book is exposition about samo random part of paris and things like that.
For example he will spend a book exploring the past and practice of a monastery in parris just because Valjean is hiding there.

I’m not French. With translations you may miss something, is all I can say.
The Red and the Black was very good in the translation I read
