Anon said nation, and there's a difference between a nation and a state. He probably means state. Anyway, my point was that despite the separation of church and state, the fact you're yet to have a President that isn't Christian, and the influence the Church has over American society cannot be underestimated.

I'm not an American (and you appear to be), so I must admit my knowledge of your political system is less than my knowledge of others, and yours too. From what I do know, however, the church and state do seem to be linked. Wasn't there something about JFK being a Catholic that came up when he sought election? American politics and religion (from an outsider's perspective) do appear to be inextricably linked. And thus America is a Christian relation. That's my take on it, anyway.

>> No.1417329

>>1417281
yes there is a christian relation to the politics of gaining office, so you are correct, but that is why we have the judicial system to keep in check any move made by those who would like to make this a christian government.
The issue with JFK involved the believe that he would not keep his faith separate from his role as president, many thought the pope would have influence over him, and as such the U.S. would become a Christian State. Obviously the fear was irrational, and unnecessary: JFK never sought, nor was given help from the Vatican.

>> No.1417356

>>1417329
And so if the attainment of office and religion are linked, religion and office are tied. It's fair to call the US a Christian nation.

The moral basis for the formulation of new legislation (assuming it is not solely pragmatically nor ideologically motivated) stems from religion, and one's own moral compass.

Whilst the judiciary may protect against America being turned into a Christian nation in its strict sense, with it becoming the state religion, for example, I think Christianity probably has more sway over politics than in many countries (such as the UK, my own), where we do have a state religion.

Take American Conservatives and abortion, for example. It's no coincidence that they are predominantly Christian, and also reject abortion. Whilst I'm not claiming that they simply reject abortion because their religion tells them so, I think that its influence is certainly present.
