Honestly, I think this is right.

Drugs and alcohol make music more enjoyable and maybe let you find more inside the art.

They might even add something to surrealist films, like those of Bunuel, Cocteau or Maya Derren.

They add nothing to reading, and merely serve as an impediment to enjoyment, interpretation and stimulation.
