you digest the character in your head for a good time and write whatever qualities and traits they have in your mind. This helps to have a more solid foundation on how are they and how they act and react to situations. Also it deepens the character's persona in your writing. García Márquez has written about some characters of One Hundred Years of Solitude in short stories several years before actually sitting down and writing One Hundred Years of Solitude, the time he took in digesting the characters is why each character has a very defined personality.

Nope, they're just sketches of how the characters are going to be in the novel. It's just the general drafts of the novel, some writers have tons of drafts for one novel, some others don't write a single draft.
