What are the advantages of reading philosophy and what should I read

>What are the advantages of reading philosophy
None. Don't bore yourself. And don't listen to the pseuds who have semi-successfully convinced themselves that they haven't wasted their time.

Why do you want to be smarter? Are you concerned with image or comfort? Reading as a hobby isn't worth it if you don't enjoy it. Read what you think is fun, and don't stress yourself. If you don't enjoy reading then apply more mental energy to a different hobby that you actually enjoy.

That guy is the one bullshitting you. He is one of the people I was telling you about who has convinced himself of something that isn't true. He lives in a constant war with himself. Just have fun with reading, and don't worry.

What do you enjoy reading then, anon? I suggest Mortimer Adler's How To Read A Book to improve your reading skills.

You will reason better and have a better understanding of everything.

>> No.14081643

It helps you become a more morally conscious, critical thinking person, better aware of bad reasoning and fallacies, more equipped to make decisions when the time for decisions that make a difference come along (for example, voting in a political context, or knowing whether to accept or reject something from a peddler), and you also learn a little bit of therapeutic self-help if you're into that sort of thing. Also, if there's things you have interest in (for example, science, or history, or mathematics, or art), philosophy will always have things to say crossing over with those topics. It lets you gain greater appreciation for those topics while providing new, additional context as well. Philosophy makes you less uncritically dogmatic as well, which everyone else around you who knows better will recognize as a better thing; nobody who is still uncritical notices it for themselves, but when they move past that stage, they'll always thank philosophy for that. And maybe, just maybe, you'll actually love philosophy for its own sake, like many people do. Maybe not, but maybe yeah.

if you were to read one part of philosophy, just get a strong grasp on logic. as that is by far the most important and practical in everyday life

No it's okay bro. I was just being a prick. You should stop trying to view reading as necessarily making you smarter. If you read in order to supplement something you are trying to do you will become smarter.

For instance, research. If you are just reading just to read, the knowledge means nothing and will go in one ear and out the other. Books alone don't make you smarter, you have to apply it.

That list is pretty Reddit, but I know a few very intelligent, yet uncultured, people who could benefit from it.

Philosophy is literary theory for the story of your life.

I'd recommend the Dao de Jing and The Enchiridion. Both fairly short and approachable works, and lots of resonance.

A good intro-to-philosophy starter pack is something like this:
Plato: Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Phaedo, Meno, Republic books I-II
Descartes: Meditations 1-2
Some Berkeley (Principles), some Hume (Enquiry)
Some Kant (Prolegomena, Groundwork)
Basic existentialism (Sartre, Camus, etc) is also relatively easy to get into. Same goes for basic stoicism (Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius). Get to know the pre-Socratics, they're pretty easy as well. There's also some relatively easy/fun analytic papers like Frege's "Sense and Reference," Russell's "Knowledge by Acquaintance and Knowledge by Description," Jackson's "Epiphenomenal Qualia," Nagel's "What Is It Like to Be a Bat?," and chapter 1 of Putnam's Reason, Truth, and History ("Brains in a Vat"). You should also read the Communist Manifesto by Marx/Engels, bits from Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau on social contract, stuff on utilitarianism from Mill. Oh and find a way to learn basic Aristotle, Spinoza, and Leibniz at some point.
