You can impress an autistic girl that's also into the polyglot shit, you never know. I remember I once started talking with a girl about languages but sadly I never ever saw her again. It would have been pretty cool to have a wannabe polyglot gf like me

If you're from Europe and you can't speak English, German, and French at the bare minimum, you're an embarrassment.

True, the French and Italian combo is pretty powerful to break some ice and toot your own horn but that's pretty much it.

First two are reserved for the mother tongue and english, you don't have much of a choice there. Third one is for your personal affinity. I've picked Russian and Latin for muh literature, plus planning to learn German soon.

so 98%+ of europeans are an embarrassment? actually, that's probably pretty accurate. at least it's not america tier though.

The patrician choice for that region is Serbian, just as Goethe preferred it.

You're underestimating the number of bi and trilinguals quite a lot. Many people grow up in bilingual households along the borders, and even the hillbillies learn A2 level English and German for business most of the time.

Depends on what matters to you. Didn't matter much to me.

During school, I was made to study at least a couple years of four different languages, none of which include my mother tongue.

>im going to learn three languages, while i currently only know english XD
5 years from now, you will still only know english. im learning german (taking uni courses for it and everything) and its a lot of work. you need to really dedicate yourself to just one language and continue with that solely until you are fluent, otherwise you will never learn shit.

>The patrician choice for that region is Serbian
tbqh, im probably never going to spend any real time in the balkans, other than just visiting. my family situation is a shitfest, so i dont know anyone who lives there.

>Many people grow up in bilingual households along the borders
yeah, but most people live in cities, where they just use their native language and english.

>even the hillbillies learn A2 level English and German for business most of the time
A2 is meme level. i know most people know a good amount of english, however, but no german so much, nor french. my mom took french classes in highschool but did retain any of it (she's bilingual though - scando-language + english). she didn't retain any polish from her parents.

>>14065437
i live in muttland where you need to take one, but no on learns anything. in europe, people only really learn english. they always forget the french or german they learned (based from person experiences and family)

Define bare minimum
I know a few German and French words and some of the very very basics of each language but I can't communicate any idea more complex than "hello my name is anon and the sky is blue" in any of them

As an albanian you underestimate there's a synergy between languages. If you are raised speaking Romantic language, other Romantic ones are easier. Same for Germanic or Slavic ones.

You can read Kafka in German and Camus in French without reaching for a dictionary on every page. In other words, just a smidgen better than B2.

if you learn two similar languages at the same time, you are just going to confuse them, especially the genders for the nouns. learning italian and spanish at the same time would have to be a nightmare for that reason. nevertheless, our burger friend only knows english and probably 10 german words.
