Just finished Tiamat's Wrath last night...

I'm not sure I like the direction it went with solving the issues of the last book or two. Especially the final battle felt like the bad guys were made completely retarded so that the scrappy good guys could win after pulling a fleet out of their asses.
They even had the good guys do what they bad guys should have had set-up that would have completely flattened the good guys' fleet.

The whole book kinda felt like they knew they'd written themselves into a corner, so they just made things happen to say there'd never been walls behind them at all.

Which is a shame, because besides Cibola Burn, the series has been overall good.

I'll give them the major character death in it. That was at least a well thought out plan, that still required sacrifice to pull off.

I'll likely still read whatever the 9th and final book ends up being, but I'm not looking forward to it.

You were supposed to expect that after the author had nothing to write about so he dedicated an entire book to tight pussy, then it took so long for the sequel to be released.
He is just stretching books to reach his quota for the publishing contract. It was supposed to be a trilogy, he stretched it then said "he never meant for it to be a trilogy", even though the trilogy came from his lips.

I have the book but will wait for a while to read it. After I heard that (with all the penis waving about pussy being too tight) Kip doesn't make a sloppy mess of that tight pussy I lost interest.

Funny you should mention that, but he's absolutely smashed that pussy wide open by the point I'm at. He broke the walls in the epilogue of the last book right before he fixed the painting / art thing.

Only 34 chapters into memory sorrow and thorn, and its really testing my ability to care. It keeps referencing old legends and swords and terrible beings. But its all tell, no show. The supposed villain is only talked about in long lore dumps. And the supposed solution to defeat him is in even more lore dumps. The main character Simon(sp?) Just walks around being a whiny shit and getting into small scrapes, while everyone around him never stop talking about far grander events that arent actually happening, but once did happen and are supposed to set up grand event to happen later.
Meanwhile in the present Simon is crying again, because he stubbed toe
Just reveal his secret identity already. Fuck.

That last few chapter in particular are literally a couple of nerd trying to cross reference imformation they got out of amother nerd's book. Is this a fantasy book, or a book report? I hope this gets better. Identifying things George RR Martin stole can only keep my interests for so long.

In general, the characters are good. Though, with writing faults that get worse as the series goes along.
The main plot of each book tends to come to a satisfying conclusion, though often the arc-plot of the series doesn't really budge.

The world is believable enough. The initial faction state of Earth-Gov (the UN), Mars, and the Belters each have subfactions. Such as the Belters having groups working for legitimacy and respect, and other groups that are out and out terrorists who're really just out to wreck shit and maybe accrue a little power that way.

The Human-Tech is generally firm sci-fi, with the handwave of the main engines that allow for constant acceleration with a comparatively small amount of fuel.
The arc-plot mystery is interesting, in that sort of: Everyone's gone like they left in the middle of whatever they were doing way. Though, their tech breaks physics over its knee, and even in book 8, which is several decades after the first book, there's still the occasional scientist bitching about it.

And, up until the final battle of book 8, the tactics felt smart enough. They made some degree of sense, though there were folks who had insane character shields.

Saw somewhere that the intent of the series was to fill the gap between "Solar civilization" and "Interstellar civilization" and it has generally done that.

Anon, just wanted to thank you again for recommending Wolf In Shadow. I bought it and right now I'm 3 chapters in. Ive been dealing with depression on and off for a while now and nothing has interested me lately. But this is the first book I've read in 2-3 years that has truly captivated my interest, and I'm fucking loving it.
I love westerns, and I love fantasy, but finding books where they overlap is hard, and even when I do, they're rarely executed well. This book does it right.

I love the way Gemmell's prose is pretty straight forward, like a classic pulp western, but the characters speak in formal/high speech, I'm a sucker for that kind of anachronism. And Shannow is just a really well written character, he's a big bundle of tropes, but tropes being executed correctly. And you had mentioned the bible quotes initially, but i was raised catholic, so i really like them. It's a great way to create a sense of deep lore in a 'second earth" story, similar to the way Tolkien uses in-story history to build import, but better adapted to future-scifi-fantasy. Really, they're not jarring, cause if you're like me ,grew up in the faith then kinda moved away from the church later in life, the scenes with quotes are hella kino (sorry, I've been spending too much time on /tv/)

And i know you said it wasn't a "christian" book, but the more i read it, I actually think it is. But not in a bad way. the christian influences are pretty blatant, but i feel like they are utilized in a way that is very beneficial to the worldbuilding,, and that the way they are inserted into the lore and character profile is more informative, while still informing about the both the individual characters and how religion influences the story is more help than hinderance, especially if you know your bible.

Dead men walking was probably the best Warhammer novel I've read. It's bleak but not in an edgy way.
By the end the two opposing forces become seemingly more and more similar to each other and the title could describe both.
Usually those kind of cheeky developments and meaning are just simply not there in the other 40k novels so it's quite refreshing.

It just isn’t Sanderson’s best work, and it feels hacky even for him, who I already take with a grain of salt when reading his stuff. He’s obviously known for going full autist with his magic systems, then adding in the guns on top of that made him spurge out on the technical aspects of implementing them with allomancy, and it really weighed down the book but explains the “magical physics” of every gunfight for pages and pages, instead of moving the plot along or character development. That being said, Wayne is funny as shit And better developed than Wax, and every scene with him is fun to read.

Has there even been a fantasy book that's made use of illustrations? I understand that a lack of visuals can be a good thing as it allows the reader to fill it in with their own imagination, but at the same time it prevents the author's vision from being wholly conveyed. I know there are also logistical reasons for not printing books with pictures, but maybe there's been a web novel that's included illustrations of key settings or characters?

Ways to use goodreads for recs ranked
1. Going through stuff an author/reviewer you tend to agree with likes/reads
2. Using groups (basically a replacement for using this thread)
3/4. The because you enjoyed (Book) feature that sometimes pops up on your profile/Going on a book's page and going through "readers also enjoyed"
5.The actual recommendations pages (they rarely update and in my experience are weirdly biased toward forgotten books from the late 90s)
6. trying to use the "new releases by authors you've read" page

So for similar books it's fairly alright, I just tested on California Bones (alright urban fantasy dystopia novel) and got two interesting Urban fantasy books from "readers also enjoyed" that I've never heard of before.
For general recs it's probably weaker than just asking here or even on r/fantasy lol

What I Looked At Today & Other Stuff
It's foolish at best to trust any one individual when you have no idea of their similarity to you. As far as I can tell I'm more dissimilar than average, which means my opinions are of less value than average to the average reader, but I don't care. Any dissimilarity is coincidental and not intentional. While outside influences do affect whether I will read a book, it doesn't affect my enjoyment. Those who let outside influences affect their enjoyment are entirely silly. I haven't read LOTR because I found it to be boring, but I watched the director's cut of the movies which were overly long but enjoyable enough. Likewise, if something is entirely obscure and/or hated, but I enjoy it, then I don't have any problem telling people I enjoy it, within reason. I continually deride chartanon's charts and will soon do so again. I find most of what is included to be complete trash that most shouldn't ever look at. However, I entirely appreciate that he provides a different perspective for those who would enjoy it and I hope that he continues to do so regardless of their reception.

As a reminder, I'm using a tripcode for the duration of this thread by request of this post:
>>14037771

>>14050173 Wolf In Shadow - David Gemmel
This is the second (?) Gemmel novel I've looked at, the first being Sword In The Storm, which I didn't like. I don't like this one either. I'm indifferent to the biblical stuff. Probably the closest thing to a biblically referencing novel that I've enjoyed is East of Eden.

>>14050325 Thraxas - Martin Scott
Seems like a fun read with a nice voice. Will consider.

>>14050676 Senlin Ascends - Josiah Bancroft
This was in the 2016 SPFBO three years after being published and then became traditionally published and relatively much more popular. I'm ambivalent about it, so it's a low priority read.

>>14051973 The Cruel Stars - John Birmingham
Released a few months ago. Could be enjoyable.

>>14053365 Cold Storage - David Koepp
Seems fine enough, but I'm not interested in survival horror of "[x] (in this case fungus) runs rampant threatening the continuance of humanity".

>>14057032 Merchant Princes - Charles Stross
This is the 7th work from Stross I've looked at. I haven't liked any of them. Why have I tried so many? I don't know. I really dislike his writing style.

>>14057032 Daughter of the Empire - Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts
Feist continues to be neither good nor bad, but rather simply I don't want to read for some reason.

>>14057426 The Worm Ouroboros - E.R. Eddison
If you are studying pre-Tolkien fantasy, then sure, why not? Otherwise, doesn't seem worthwhile to me.

For additional hatereading fodder, here's an incomplete list of novels I've looked at and probably won't ever read after looking at them and also those that I have looked at and will read more of them eventually and hopefully find them enjoyable, thus confirming my initial assessment.

These books are so well-written it's insane. Not in the literary sense, but in the sense that the author knows exactly what he's going for. It's snappy action movie dialogue that moves you from A to B while keeping things fresh.

Also the villain being charismatic and lovable every time he pops up onto the page was a fun change of pace.

I don't think there's a hard equivalent because I don't think there's any single work of scifi that influenced the entire genre nearly as much as LotR did for fantasy. Frankenstein, The Time Machine, War of the Worlds, Journey to the Center of the Earth, I, Robot, Foundation, Childhood's End, Starship Troopers, 1984, Dune, Neuromancer, let's be honest Star Trek and Star Wars, and plenty of others were massive influences on specific aspects and subgenres of scifi, but none came to define the entire thing like Lord of the Rings. I think it's mainly because scifi was more disparate to begin with.

Just finished the latest book in the Red Rising series, Dark Age. It was okay. I liked it more than the last book which sucked. Not sure why I keep reading this series. This latest trilogy though, it's giving me the same feeling as book 1 did. Like the author knows the story he wants to write but feels obligated to render the lead-up to it. Like book 2 in the original trilogy was where the story really started and book 1 was there to provide the background. I got hat feeling with book 1 and most of book 2 of this new trilogy.

As I said in the preface, it's dissimilar.

>uncalled call opinions
How dare someone on 4chan posts an opinion that no one specifically asked for!

>incredibly debilitating autism
Just because you believe it to be so doesn't mean that it is. Not the least of which is the complete conflation between "4chan autism" and "actual autism", the former of which is simply "something I don't like but I can't just say that directly so I have to use some other words according to the local culture so that I seem like that I fit in." Probably the posters I dislike the most are those who come to 4chan in search of a conformity they prefer relative to the standard societal version.

Just finished - Ok, yeah, people are going to absolutely hate that ending epilogue and it's ramifications, but everything up to that point was pretty great, and ended on a fantastic note. Before the epilogue.

Major spoilers for the epilogue and ending of Lightbringer

The epilogue makes it very clear that the entire Lightbringer series is a story being read by a character in the Night Angel universe, implied to be a bible of sorts, and ends basically as "until next time...", more or less cementing the rumor that he's doing another trilogy set in the Night Angel world.

also on a side note. if the eventual sequel to super sales isnt gonna be called super sales on super villains imma be real mad.

trademarking books happens all the time and it isnt really bad. what people mostly trademark are specific books by a certain author.
for example harry potter is in conjunction with rowling is trademarked. MSE just went full retard basically. atleast hes doing well with kickstarter now. clearly people like his books to the point where they throw thousands of dollars at him.

i couldnt actually give a fuck about the sex. im actually in it for the story. what i enjoy are the little bits of lore that slowly add to the whole. for example finding out that the curator is miles campbell, vinces and melodies father and felix uncle was really a great moment. i also have an issue with how slowly the arand books get randi'd. its a minor issue but might as well stop publishing arand books and make them all as darren. its just a minor gripe mind you but i really cant put my finger on what exactly is wrong with it. its nothing relating to the smut. its something with the narrative and story telling that is slowly changing.
