14023092 No.14023092 [Reply] [Original]

On the art of it, the experience of it, and war in general.

I'm going to start reading it when I finish Aristotle(and with him the whole of the Greeks). Somewhat as a final read before I branch off into the various subjects of economics, occult, religions other than Christianity, War and of course continuing to read philosophy.

>> No.14023098

Aristotle being the final read, not On War - that was merely an example.

Mao's book is pretty good. It lays out the basics and goes in to a good bit of detail with the mentality that applies to specific tactics, but doesn't actually go over them.
In other words, it's not a how to on ambushing (L vs V formation and near vs far stuff like that), it just tells you how to use ambushing and why ambushing is important. That sort of thing.

>wew, nice anon, could I get the original image size somewhere?

The mega in the /lit/ thread, is there even a name for the first thread on a board?

And would you say those 4 books in your pic are your main choices for war? or Strategy? And btw what would you say the mass emphasis on guerrilla warfare comes from? And another question but do you know of any textbook of tactics, goes over various manoeuvres and the likes? As far as strategy goes all of these books exist for that.

You mean the sticky? The pinned thread by the mod that comes up first/at the beginning of page 1?

>would you say those 4 books in your pic are your main choices for war?
If you wanted to learn about "the theory" of war, probably yes. I have training, so I actually enjoy reading about "the practice" more (like how to books on small unit tactics or long range shooting). There are other great books, but those are classics for a reason. Book of Five Rings might be a little more about "the practice" of sword fighting, but it has a lot of really poetic writing on mindset, which is also very important.

>>14024755

>I would say no just because Von Clausewitz covers more, however I would put them both in the top 10 books on military strategy.
I know I'm asking a lot, but would you care to name those 10 books?

>You mean the sticky? The pinned thread by the mod that comes up first/at the beginning of page 1?
Yea! Duh, I forgot the name.

>but it has a lot of really poetic writing on mindset, which is also very important.
Thanks, will read all of them.

>Online. And most of them are out of print and copies go for hundreds of dollars so you'll have to get them "other" ways.
Archive dot org and Library Genesis are probably the easiest to use.
Cheers.

Sorry, I forgot
>And btw what would you say the mass emphasis on guerrilla warfare comes from?
It's just extremely interesting to me. It's what got me into reading cause I found a topic that would hold my attention. Where before I could never sit still long enough to finish a book. I'm planning on doing my Master's work on it next year.
>do you know of any textbook of tactics
Yea, I've posted a few already, I'll mass quote them when I've posted more.

>>14024821
>but would you care to name those 10 books?
Oooo, that's a toughy.
Those 4, Fry The Brain (this has a lot of "practice" in it, but the whole book is on the strategy of sniping and guerrilla warfare), Over the Mountain and The Other Side of the Mountain (I might be over emphasising these but they are GREAT books and their story is so interesting, as in both the story of the books and in the books), Any book by David Killcullen, Maneuver Warfare Handook/4th Generation Warfare Handbook (same author, essentially writes a great book on conventional warfare in the height of the Cold War then updates it to be about unconventional war), Infantry Attacks, and War of the Flea.
Now, I'm not any sort of expert, mind you. So take that as MY top ten on strategy. And I would have a different answer had your question been "mindset" or "tactics".

Yea.
Tactics, again, Fry the Brain, Precision Rifle B.I.B.L.E., Principles of Personal Defense, Violence of Mind, Kill or Get Killed, (I don't own these, but I should) The Reluctant Partisan or Guerrilla Gunfighter by John Mosby, Left of Bang, The Tactical Advantage, Minimanual of the Urban Guerrilla (kinda bullshit cause they expect you to be kidnapping people and doing political assassinations, but it's got some good info), and Total Resistance (which is a little outdated, but still good).
You can also go to training companies websites and buy their curriculum, which is kinda what John Mosby's books are.
https://www.tacticalresponse.com/collections/gear/products/fighting-pistol-handout
But most companies that do this also have DVDs and the like.

Probably Principles of Personal Defense and Fry the Brain again, Violence of Mind again as well, On Killing, Gift of Fear, Forgotten Soldier and A Long Way Gone (if you're looking for a personal account of the emotional toll war takes), after that it kind of depends on what you're looking for cause mindset can be topic specific and bleeds into theory, but I guess I would recommend Diplomacy by Kissinger, Dying to Win, and Ghost: My Thirty Years as an Undercover FBI Agent.

Library Genesis. Search it, then it will have a hyper link (click the title) that will take you to a page. At the bottom will be a list of websites that you can use to download it. Z-Libray seems to always work.
Scratch that, libgen seems to be down at the moment. Google z library. It should take you there.

Understanding Modern Warfare

Yea I slept for 17 hours so had a lot of catching up to do, will be adding all of them to the list. Out of curiosity, which of the books on Guerrilla warfare would you say are your favourites? The one by Mao? If so any others?

So, this might just be because of my personal experience, but it's still a good book, but I would have to say Fry the Brain.
Every summer for the last couple of years, I've gone and taken firearms training classes where I've learned all sorts of things like small unit tactics and drills and all that. Bounding, peeling, fireteam overwatch, patrolling techniques, shooting from retention, all that stuff.
But when I read that book, it really opened my eyes to how effective the "sniper" is.
If someone wants to be as effective as an individual can be at defending themselves, their family, and their community, learning concealed long range marksmanship (sniping) is the way to go.
And it really showed me how sniping is the apex of guerrilla warfare.
And the fact that the common man can in some way legally get a bolt action rifle in most of the modern world, and practice with it is such a deviation from the "high speed low drag oper8r" stuff. Most ranges won't let you shoot faster than 1 round every second, much less than move from lane to lane leap frogging with your buddy providing covering fire while he reloads and engaging different targets as you move from one side of the range to the other symbolizing a peel while reacting to an ambush.
But shooting something at 100+ yards? Only once? Putting an emphasis on lack of movement and marksmanship?
You can do that anywhere.
And then you can go put it into practice. Hunters have to learn how to infil and exfil silently. They learn effective camouflage techniques. They even mask their sent.
And they actually kill something.
So training for the urban guerrilla sniper is insanely easy and effective.
They even talk in the book about how in both Falujah and Poland, the guerrillas would train underground and in the sewers.

I'm kinda rambling now, but that book kinda took my whole perspective on warfighting and turned it on it's head. So I really like that book.
>also again, I want to stress, I am no expert, I just try to pay attention when they're talking

You can find it online for free if you want.

>Would you mind talking more about the in depth responsibility's and actions of the guerrilla sniper?
Well the actions would have to serve the greater political purpose, whatever that is. That's why anti-imperialist guerrilla wars have been so successful. The IRA for example used sniper when the British stalled the peace talks.
The book also talks about following the international laws on war. Like wearing a uniform, but the uniforms can be as simple as a colored bandana (which is what the soldiers in the Venezuelan coupe did just a few months ago).
Also, again, discussed at length in the book, the sniper uses the trust of the community and makes sure he stays in their good graces.
The first chapter is all about an IRA sniper cell and how each of like 6 people had their own jobs and only one was to shoot a cop/British patrol.
They borrowed a car.
They met at a pub.
They acquired a rifle.
And they had a get away.
A lot of the sniper "hides" that the IRA would use would be cars that were given/loaned to them or houses that were conveniently vacant by sympathetic people in the community.
And then they had preventative measures to protect them should they be charged with a crime, like removing gunshot residue from them. A(nother) fun fact I learned from that book, the IRA didn't wear track suits and jeans cause they wanted to be trendy. Track suits leave no fibers to be used in court and jeans were so common that if they did find fibers at the scene of a shooting/sniping, they couldn't be used anyway.
