14020617 No.14020617 [Reply] [Original]

I have realized that porn, even instagram thots, is the manifestation of lust in an image and that only way to truly become free from it is for to stop feeling the lust in myself.

What books should I read in order to stop lust? I know some people recommend 'the bible' but that is a very cliche and unnunaced response. I'd need to know what part of that very large book to read.

I'm more interested in stopping lust from the perspective of buddhism or advaita. Especially the former.

This is a question of virtue, as lust is a vice. Listen to Aristotle when he teaches that vritue (in this case some form of moderation) is achieved by constantly putting reason over the base instinct that is lust.

In practice, don't jerk of every night, don't let Tinder or porn tempt you. In the beginning it will be hard, but easier with time. When this virtue is achieved it will be a part of your natural response and seem not worth mentioning.

If you are interested in the theoretical backings of virtue , check out Nichomachean Ethics

From the perspective of Buddhism, recognizing lust when it arises, and letting go of the thought or feeling, is one part. Charnel ground meditations, and body contemplations are more tools. When you do succumb to hornyness, consider how gratifying your urges causes it to return, but stronger.

Speaking from a wealth of experience battling an awful porn addiction (cooming to the point of bleeding on more than one occasion) there are two key things to not becoming a Coomer.

1: Find a physical task that will keep both your body and mind busy for at least 5-6 hours a day. Essentially have a job to do. Breaks are allowed of course, and you don't even have to work hard. Just have a commitment that eats up your free time and energy.

2: Have a good reason for quitting. For me there are several:
A) Because I want a GF who'll become my wife one day and I can't get one if I'm a degenerate coomer.
B) It is morally wrong to masturbate to pornhub type porn. Runaways getting tricked and abused into porn is not good, obviously. I'm not interested in promoting this misery.
C) Porn and sexual imagery is a form of mind control used on the masses to make us docile. Free yourself from it as much as you can.
D) For Christ. But most men are too weak to commit to anyone or anything but themselves (and sometimes barely that).

Fellow cumbrain here. I think this might actually be the key. About a year ago I went through a phase where I was seriously considering going to Church. I went months without masurbating, and even when I finally relapsed, I stayed away from porn.
>I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do.

'Practice of Brahmacharya' by Sivananda is also good

Poets have exaggerated the beauty of ladies. They are misguided persons who put young
men on the wrong path. Descriptions like “damsels with bewitching eyes”, “face like the moon”,
“rosy cheeks and honeyed lips” are false and imaginary. Where is the beauty in the dead body, in
old women, in sick ladies? Where is the beauty when a lady is infuriated? You are aware of this
and yet you cling to their bodies! Are you not confirmed fools! This is due to the force of Maya.
How mysterious is the power of Maya and Moha! The beauty of a woman is false, artificial and
decaying. Real beauty is undecaying and eternal. The Atman is the source of all beauties. His
beauty is everlasting and undecaying. It is ornaments, silken clothing with fanciful borders,
dressing of the hair with golden hairpins, flowers, application of powder to their faces, lipstick to
the lips and unguent to their eyes that lend a temporary decoration and artificial glittering to the
women. Deprive them of their face powders, their ornaments and gaudy dress, and ask them to
wear a simple white cloth without any border. Where is the beauty now? The beauty of the skin
is a delusion only.

Poets describe in their fanciful, passionate moods that honey flows from the lips of a
young, beautiful lady. Is this really true? What do you actually see? The stinking pus from the
sockets of the teeth that are affected with dreadful pyorrhoea, the nasty and abdominal sputum
from the throat, and foul saliva dribbling on the lips at night—do you call all this as honey and
nectar? And yet, the passionate, lustful and sex-intoxicated man swallows these filthy excretions
when he is under the sway of excitement! Is there anything more revolting than this? Are not
these poets culpable, when they have given such a false description, when they have caused great
havoc and damage to passionate young men?

Behind the shining skin there is the raw flesh. Behind the smiles of a young lady are
hidden frown and anger. Behind the rosy lips lie germs of diseases. Behind the gentleness and
kind words are hidden harsh words and abuses. Life is fleeting and uncertain, O passionate man!
Realize the beauty of the Atman in the heart. The body is the abode for diseases. The net of
affection in this world is strengthened by long indulgence. It has entwined its thick knotted twine
around your neck. Minus skin, minus dress, minus ornaments, woman is nothing. Just imagine for a
moment that her skin is removed. You will have to stand by her side with a long stick to drive
away crows and vultures. Physical beauty is superficial, illusory and fading. It is skin-deep. Do
not be deluded by external appearances. It is the jugglery of Maya. Go to the source, Atman, the
beauty of beauties, the everlasting beauty.

we can do good without God - I am not advocating away from God, go to church, but rather I feel this mentality can lead to some adverse conclusions. For example you see some athiest or hear great moral feats in lands unknown to Gods word, and feel that maybe God exists is several forms, under different names, or perhaps there is no God at all, for if we need Gods grace to do good, and we can do good without it, then the logical conclusion is that God may not exist. Yahweh gave to humans two laws, the written law of Moses (the ten commandments, leviticus, and generally the Bible) but also, jsut so people wouldn't be so fucking debased all the time, he wrote the law onto every humans heart, this is why people innately know that murder is bad, and thievery is wrong (some people use this to assume that we can arrive at morality through pure reason, which we can arrive at some points but not others) and for the other points, such as monogamy, we need Gods written words.

>The dialectal interpretation of history as a sequence of syntheses is correct. But the driving force aren't the absolute spirit and concepts, ideas and ideals realized in men - but instead it's all material, the economic condition and dynamics over the means of production make for the driving force.
How do the young Hegelians such as Marx claim that Hegel (or German Idealism broadly) wasn't right all along. You can easily say that the economic conditions are a result of the actions of humans driven by their ideas and ideals.

It seems like today, we all talk about ideologies and how those affect economy and that's what we witness.
Is there a more radical materialism that actually rules out the previous view?
Did they just really not want to talk about "the absolute" anymore - even if Hegel says it acts through humans anyway?
How was he wrong in emphasizing the non-material dynamics?
How do Marxists really part with Hegel? I don't see it

Porn is not inherently addictive. Let me clarify: heroin's chemical structure mimics endogenous opioids allowing it to bind to the brain's natural mu-opoid receptors. This has a direct neurochemical effect on your brain creating a physical addiction.

Porn abuse is a behavioral addiction. It is the symptom of an underlying mental or emotional trauma. It is a kind of self-medication and coping mechanism for that trauma. The symptoms you feel when you cut out porn, are not "withdrawal" they are the symptoms of an underlying disorder. People actually die from drug withdrawl, they get chills, high fever, suffer incredible bouts of depression and pain. These symptoms have a biochemical origin. You will not experience this when quitting porn. This means that your efforts should not be focused on trying to "cure" your porn addiction but on identifying the underlying trauma and trying to resolve it. Unless you do that, the "addiction" will persist and will progressively get worse.

I can't give you specific advice as your trauma will be deeply personal and it's solution will require your own insight. I can advise you to sit down and think back to the first time that you started abusing porn, think about the context. For me it was when I was in middle school and used to look at naked pictures on an old computer in our house. There was no heating in that room so no one would go in there and I used to lock the door and use our dial up connection to look at pics of naked girls on google images. I started abusing porn to medicate feelings of anxiety over academic success and the associated feelings of worthlessness in the event of failure. I felt nobody would love me unless I had worldly success, including my parents. But rather than deal with that trauma I turned to porn as a temporary escape. I had those feelings when I was 12. Only now, in my mid-twenties, am I beginning to deal with them.

Trying to personify your addiction, trying to have an imaginary dialogue with him can also help, above all trying to understand your trauma, understand it without judgment, repression or aversion, is the best way--maybe the only real way--out of the hole. Everything else, nofap, self-help books, even religion, is just a superficial, temporary fix. At best you replace porn with another addiction, or your underlying disorder with a different one, at worst that new addiction or disorder is even more harmful than the original.

John 14:6 kjv
>Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The bible is the correct answer, as cliche as it is. Most people would recommend you to read the book of John first, then finish the new testament. It would be best to read it after you get saved as you will be able to understand it better, and also you must read it in the King James version. If you have 2 hours to sink in, I recommend you watch this censored documentary as well and if you don't just trust many others when they tell you to read kjv.

>How is this achieved?
The traditional answer is that the aspirant seeking liberation is suppose to permanently enter the ascetic/monastic state of sannyasa by abandoning his possessions and former life and seeking instruction/initiation by a teacher already established in Brahma. The aspirant is supposed to work on cultivating the Sadhana Catustaya (fourfold discipline), of Viveka (discrimination between the real and unreal), Vairagya (non-attachment), Shatsampat (the six virtues, i.e. tranquility, training of the senses, withdrawal, forbearance, faith and focus), and Mumukshutva (a desire for enlightenment and liberation). An aspirant who has developed these disciplines under a teachers is ready to proceed to the final stages of practice which are Sravana (learning the Vedantic teachings through studying the texts under a teacher or through oral instruction), Manana (reflecting on and considering said teachings) and finally Nididhyasana (meditating on the truth of the teachings, culminating in the direct and complete realization+experience of them, which is synonymous with liberation and bliss ). According to traditional Advaita attaining liberation as a householder living a normal life is practically impossible. However, as a householder one can still study Advaitic texts and benefit spiritually from them regardless, some people find that studying Advaita even while living a normal life with a job, family and so on makes them blissful and carefree, untroubled by the events around them etc even if this is inferior to the ineffable and all-encompassing bliss that liberation is. Later Vedantic and Tantric schools don't require renunciation and instead claim that householders of sufficient spiritual attainment can reach liberation.
