If you watched the final episode rust Cohle realizes he was wrong and has a final monologue that was optimistic and very contradictory to what he used to believe.
He drops his pessimistic outlook and changes his perspective. It was not believable though. I think the writer had to do that to not upset viewers.

What bothered me about that ending is that he doesn't address the determinism he talks about earlier. All the stuff about being programmed, a dream of being a person, etc. Even if the 'light is winning' they still have no control over what they're doing according to Rust. Rather than it being a nightmare theyre constantly waking up into it's some mix of nightmare and dream, but theyre still not real people.
