I think teachers don't truly pick up on genius when they're grading papers. They aren't expecting it and who knows how many they've graded before it. They're just grading on some set criteria and not looking at it as anything other than an assignment. If they were constantly on the look out for genius than they'd go crazy. The same thing happens to me. I submit these wonderful papers teeming with genius and none of my teachers can pick up on it. I'm sure if they had more time and gave my writing a more fair reading, they would come to appreciate my genius just as Nabokov could have done with Pynchon. So it goes.
