Margaret Atwood and Bernardine Evaristo are the new winners of the Booker Prize. Any thoughts?

he wouldn't have cared for the booker prize or prizes in general.

It's so obvious that Evaristo was the real intended winner, not because of writing quality (her book may be good or bad, it doesn't matter when it comes to this prize) but because they wanted the kudos for awarding the Booker to a black woman for the first time.

But the judges' intense fangirling for Handmaid's Tale just couldn't let them do it, nope, instead they had to mess it up by splitting the prize with Atwood's drecky YA sequel.

Margaret Atwood deserves another one, I've never read Bernardine Evaristo.

>> No.13996376

The Booker (and most other awards) is a tool publishers use to sell books, the market for books is now mostly female, so they want books they can sell to women to win. That and rampant political correctness is why you won't see a white man winning it any time soon.

Lincoln in the Bardo won it two years ago, but I can't see anything like that happening again for a while. This year's prize was transparently driven by identity politics.

You think they did it specifically because they were buthurt she didn't win the Nobel Prize?

>> No.13998250

There are more literary awards than good books release each year, don't waste your time. The writer who said this caused such butthurt that some are still mad, 80 years latter.

Margaret can work Atwood, Berndadine, I'd Booker too for Evar, if you catch my drift.

>> No.13998477

Atwood is a good writer, though she seems to have declined in effectiveness over time. Evaristo is an unheard of, may be good, but the precis of her book sounds ghastly.

As always the prize direction was decided by the selection of the judges. The person who appoints them makes the substantial/ideological decision,
