I just graduated with a BA in English this May. Some of the courses I took were interesting. British Literature and Ancient Western Lit were my favorites. The male to female ratio is fantastic for hooking up with girls. I basically spent four years getting drunk, reading the canon, and finger banging sluts. It was rad. The only downside is now I have a useless degree and am unemployed. Oh well.

As a white male who took several English lit and English-lit-esque courses throughout his BA I was consistently able to get good grades with absolutely minimal effort, mostly by exploiting ideology. If you're not walking into your first tutorial and immediately ascertaining the ideology of your prof/TA (whoever will be grading your paper) and spoonfeeding that back to them in your writing, you're doing it wrong. If your writing what they want to hear in lucid prose with a functional structure you're pretty much guaranteed a good grade these days. I spent my whole undergrad getting fucking wasted 2-3 times a week and I graduated with a good GPA- I don't even remember writing 9/10 papers I wrote.

My resume is shitty so that doesn't help. I have kept in contact with many people from my program since graduation, and a majority of them have not found work in their field yet. In fact most of them are working minimum wage jobs. Perhaps I am too retarded to hire, but the fact of the matter is that technical writing/editing is a hard field to break into.

This. I'm not an English major, but the but the English classes I took were decent, even if they were a bit limited in terms of scope. I'm assuming these horror stories you keep hearing are an epidemic of American Universities.

I'm glad I didn't do English as a major though, because it would turn reading into a chore rather than something I do when I feel like it.
