Explain yourselves /lit/
Also why has no one been able to write anything nearly as funny as these books in 300+ years?

So this is becoming a thing after all? Nice.
I've read 2/3 of them, they're great, would read again, would put on an armor and fight windmills with, I'm eager to read the third one.

Tristram Shandy was written in 1760, and 1770 is when Rousseau's preromantic work start to gain traction. From then on it's full Romantic roller-coaster, and Romanticism is pretty self-serious at heart. Then Romanticism shattered in various sefl-absorbed schools who then reunited in the form of modernism (mostly autistic romanticism plus pretend coldness) and later postmodernism (modernism turned sour).

All in all a pretty bleak succession. People are now trying to get away from representation and see it as an impingement on their natural joy (in practice they turn out to be right).
In Sterne's time writing and reading where still seen as liberating and joy-inducing.

But I have read it, it's the usual meme trilogy that I haven't read completely (I've only read Ulysses; haven't read Infinite Jest and Gravity's Rainbow).
Don Quixote > Gargantua and Pantagruel > Tristram Shandy (would be #1 if the quality didn't drop after Tristram finishes talking about his birth, also the romance part related to his uncle is extremely cringe)

Great choice of Tristram cover. Now add Anatomy of Melancholy for a tetralogy.

>> No.13970381

>>13970377
But that trilogy is mostly about funny books, isn't that book about Melancholy on the other side of the spectrum?
If anything it needs a German or Italian book of high-minded comedy (and no, I don't mean the divine one, that one belongs to an earlier spirit).

Fuck you the romantic era was based

>> No.13970403

>>13970381
Anatomy of Melancholy is secretly hilarious, but it takes an extremely dry humor and a bookish persuasion to see it. He satirically opens the book calling himself Democritus Junior, for example, and goes on long digressions about the decline in academic standards and the varieties of ugly women.

You're talking to someone who has learnt by heart thousand of verses of Romantic poetry. Still the brooding and foreboding character of their writing cannot be denied.

Okay that seems pretty funworthy. Still an Italian or German addition would be nice.

Good taste but all of the books in the meme trilogy are very well known to one or another demographic. The type who'd laud DQ as the best-ever Spanish novel are of the same genre that'd laud Ulysses similarly for English.
