I'm Mexican and I can read the thing just fine. There's also footnotes for the obscure references and words. It's like reading Shakespeare in English, yes, but to claim you won't be missing anything is simply delusional. There's always losses in translation, however big or small they might be. But even then it's worth reading in whatever language you can master.

A good translation could definitely elevate the material that's already great and hilarious to begin with, yeah. Even good Don Quixote audiobook and I've heard some great ones in my language. I'm sure there have to be some good English translations.
