There are at most 400 hundreds book on this stack. Most of them seem fairly short, I'm willing to bet there aren't that hard to read either. Reading one of them a week should be doable, that gives you 8 years, if he started reading in middle school (which is when a lot of passionate readers start reading) he should have finished that stack by age 20 at most.

I've been seeing a lot of post to the effect of "you can't have read that many book before 30" lately. What has happened? /lit/ has always been shit, but people used to not call anyone well-read unless they had at least a thousand books under their belt.
