Can you recommend bleak, depressing novels about a person experiencing a downward spiral? Something where one's life turns from good to bad (or bad to worse). And it never gets better.

The spiraling stairs reminds me of House of Leaves. I guess in a way it is also about a man's downward spiral in life, at least for Johnny.

Jack London, Martin Eden

Bad to good to bad to worse, worser, worst.

A lot of Graham Greene novels, especially The Power and The Glory. He does "bleak" and "never gets better" extremely well.
