My personal view on this issue is that modern western culture is aimed at controlling people more than anything else, making them fairly complacent and obedient: common refusal to become an adult is just a symptom of our cultre's terminal illness.

and games are getting cheaper and cheaper and more and more accessible, while the technology itself gets more powerful and realistic every 2-5 years. humans have predictable failure modes that are replicable in animal models. chimps will abandon food and sex for drugs until they starve to death. and the reward mechanisms that allow us to learn and adapt to environmental conditions are the same ones that games tap into, albeit, much more intensely. you see, dopamine isn't only associated with reward. it's more associated with learning a specific causal pattern. to the point that pulling a lever for the 100th time for the 100th banana isn't rewarding anymore, no, it's inevitable. the same way we know that pushing a switch will turn the lights on.

the pleasurable portions of the learning curve wean off fairly quickly the more easily causality can be associated with behavior. but like any addiction, it's the comedowns that are the worst. no longer seeing a causal pattern with any behavior is painful because of that previous return to baseline once the pattern is established, so any drop would be below baseline. they have to start even lower than when they first began because they only remember what was easy. like when you don't leave your keys in the usual place or when your usual efforts aren't enough to finish a task on time. or sort of like getting used to talking to people who are of a certain intellectual bent, and then having to start all over again when you talk to people from another field.

but what makes it worse for these people is that their most difficult task in their daily lives are limited to grinding XP or doing reruns for RNG. they are not going to be able to adapt quickly enough for learning curves with longer and more variable paths. that becomes a vicious cycle and after trying and rather quickly failing at any 'real' task, the failures only justify further withdrawal, which furthers ineptitude and the loss of attitudes necessary to getting better at anything that takes more than 100 hours.

but what's more interesting is that general society hates or concerns themselves with these people because their paths don't just seem like failure, but a kind of giving up that flies in the face of all the bitterness one has to deal with in a life that isn't designed with steps and progressions for you.
