The only Godard I’ve ever genuinely enjoyed has been Breathless, where he accidentally ‘discovered’ the jump cut (really he just frantically edited the work so that it met time constraints). I found most work after to lose some of the charm of this earlier film (perhaps most of which was derived from Belmundo’s performance, anyway). Contempt was a slog, though I can recognize why it’s considered an achievement. I found the pervasive, never-ending score to be obnoxious, which I know is the ‘point’ (in, what I assume, is a critique of over-scoring films in Hollywood). It’s a satire, yeah, but one that is neither humorous or enjoyable, in my opinion.

The Weekend is almost unwatchable, and I can sit through anything. The traffic scene is incredible, yeah, but that aside, it’s an incoherent mess filled with allusions and ellipses—everything I don’t enjoy about the French New Wave.

Alphaville was fine, albeit up-it’s-own-ass with the melodramatic musings about love. Wish it had been more of what it was in the beginning shots, which was just portraying Paris as some dystopian, alien nightmare world. I liked that. The dialogue and exposition was a bit too heavy-handed for me.

All in all, I can respect what he did for film while still roll my eyes at most of his work in the 60s, which I found to be overindulgent, as if he was always trying to live up the label of ‘genius’ that was unfairly bestowed upon him after Breathless. Eh. Still, I haven’t seen the one you mentioned and I’ll give it a shot. Further, what do you like about Godard?

Almodovar is fine, doesn’t do much for me. It feels repetitive to watch more than one of his works. Bunuel is a genius, phenomenal filmmaker who was able to straddle experimental shorts and full-length, more plot-driven films with his own, unique, surrealist grace. Malick is okay, doesn’t deserve to be hailed as GOAT or anything less than decent. Days of Heaven is his best imo. Nolan isn’t for me, as he doesn’t know how to make a film without going into overlong, tiresome exposition at some point—he is incapable of leaving anything unexplained, at the detriment to film as a whole. For instance, there's nothing quantifiable one can point to that shows Beethoven should be ranked higher or lower than Mozart, but everyone can agree that they're both tier 1 composers.
