I've just noticed literature is a fucking meme. Novelists and poets are hacks, nothing but stupid people with fancy words and masters of rhetoric. Discussing literature amounts to little more than gossiping about celebrities. Prove me right.

I've been reading since I was 6 years old. I've ploughed through different literal traditions and even studied literature in university. I only respect oral tradition and folklore now, academic, commercial or historical literature is for brainlets.

Just kidding. The main difference is that while the written word can be turned into a commodity, oral tradition can't. When culture becomes reified as an artifact, it can travel and be shared in many different places at once. A Greek scroll could travel all the way to Cairo, Florence and end up somewhere in England. Monks could copy and, later, the written word could be printed. Oral tradition also means your voice can't be recorded or shared, a person from the tribe holds it, and this person alone can chose to tell it or not.
