Do you guys take notes when reading? Or do you annotate? Highlight? None of the above? How do you retain information when reading?

When studying a series I compile all the information I find important/relevant to the topic in a nice little notebook. My goal is to go from 5 books or woteva to just one that I can go to and reference for info on the topic. I also make sure to reference the where in the works the notes are from should I need further info.

I take notes on each character, and for any obscure cultural references used. For complicated novels I might make a flowchart to remember how the characters are related to each other. New vocabulary goes into my anki deck.

You don't?

I either highlight pertinent bits if I'm reading a pdf/epub or I underline and write in the margins with pencil.

I highlight on Kindle and then re-type everything manually into org-mode.

good job as long as it's filtered before and you write it down in your own words
