A Little Hatred by Joe Abercrombie (2019)
Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter (2018)
Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence (2011)
Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson (2010)
Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (2007)

If someone asks for recommendations that's been out of the game for 10+ years, you give them a list of the most popular and mainstream stuff out there to get his toes wet. Chances are he'll enjoy a good amount of those books based on the fact that he liked Forgotten Realms and DragonaLance. If he doesn't, oh well, no big deal. But you don't drop someone in the deep end right away, that's the best way to turn them off from a genre. Telling them unironically to read your shitty webnovels and ebooks and self published self-insert litRPG while deriding them for reading the popular stuff is just 4chan to the absolute Ts. He wanted a recommendation of books similar to the ones he's already read, I gave him a list of the most popular books similar to the ones he's read. As far as I can tell you've yet to actually give him a recommendation, you just insult others for their recommendations and then try to not-so-subtle peddle that Will Wright garbage.

Not really, no. Forgotten Realms is essentially dead, the only thing that gets written anymore are Drizzt novels. Dragonlance has been dead for a while. Outside of those two I can't really think of anything else in Fantasy that's still going. Sci-Fi/Fantasy you'll have stuff like the Warhammer universe or Star Wars books, but even then not really. Shared worlds have sort of died off in the last decade, which is a shame.

Man, you're inferring a lot of shit that I didn't say. I never said to teach Hunger Games at school, but if you're gonna use Steinbeck and Hesse then you should understand that they're more or less the Sanderson/Weeks/Abercrombies of their time. The widely popular, incredibly easy to read stories.

You're also an idiot for about a dozen different reasons, most of which I won't get into. But I will get into one big point. He's already expressed the kinds of books he enjoyed. If someone told me they liked YA novels about dystopian futures with a female protagonist I'd probably tell them to start with Hunger Games and go from there. Because that's what they like, and that's what will ease them back into things. You, on the other hand, hear the books he's read in the psat, and go "nah fuck that those books are trash", insult his age, insult his intelligence, and then insult the people that are willing to actually give him a list without drawing it out for two threads until you come up with a list "off the top of your head".

You're not fooling or impressing anyone, bud. Anyone with half a brain can see right through your insecurities and childishness, and all we see is a sad, lonely little boy who got picked on for reading dumb sword and sorcery books as a youth and is still carrying that burden 10+ years later.

Sanderson used to be okay, but with the publishing or the third stormlight book you see that he is being influenced by the publisher and rebbit, and it's fucking up his story.
What is worse is that he is writing YA shit (because it sells), and his other books are suffering. Instead of improving as an author, he is stagnating and regressing.

Also. Not because Wolfe and Sanderson are both Christfags authors and insert a lot of symbolism into their works means that they are similar.
They are on different spectrums of the genre wavelength. Wolfe writes for his books to be classics at a later date. Sanderson writes for fun with pop culture references. Both are entertaining in their own way. One is popcorn and home afterwards, the other is sitting quietly and sipping wine and discussing after.
This is from someone who read both Sanderson and Wolfe, and likes both modern and older books(that actually ages well and isn't boring shit).

I believe BRANDON SANDERSON has a foot fetish. My reason for believing this is because I have a foot fetish so I pick up on things most humans do not. Take for instance the ever shitty House of Cards. Now, I do not like this show (House of Cards) but I did sit through 4 seasons of that crap hoping it would get better, and in that time I noticed numerous examples of blatant foot fan service. It is a good fetish to pander to because it occupies a gray area due to the lack of nudity, which is why its perfect for a guy like BRANDON SANDERSON. Reading Mistborn, I can't help but notice how many times we are reminded of Vin's cute bare footedness. She's barefoot on the roof, toes clutching the edge. She's barefoot on cobblestone, only to walk on marble. Vin walked to his bed BAREFOOT, making no sound. Of course the obvious explanation (for the mundane majority of men) is that Vin is a Mistborn -- a thief -- and strives to remain quiet. She has to make lots of sacrifices due to the magneto magic of BRANDON SANDERSON'S world, such as never wearing toe rings or anklets (unless they are wooden or something) but I do not believe this is the sole reason for the foot prose on display in these books. The author (BRANDON SANDERSON) has fueled my spirit with his depiction of Vin. I have a hard time getting through the pages when I keep seeing examples of her beautiful foot-based dexterity, yet its these very passages that push me further on. I see visions of Vin toying with Elend, giving her man a royal footjob that any king would crave with her expertly trained toes. I think about Vin embarrassed, painting her toe nails to match her dress while Zane watches from the window. I think about her wearing glass slippers to show off her new feminine toes at the balls! Oh what a sight to behold! I am not even on the third book so I can't begin to imagine how much footy goodness is still to come. Anyway, these are my reasons for suspecting BRANDON SANDERSON has a foot fetish.

Garath lay flat in the tall, green grass on top of the cliff, and the stars twinkled up in the cloudless evening sky. He pushed himself up quietly with his elbows and looked over the edge at the camp below, where four dozen tanned Kedans howled and dined around a raging bonfire in their leather armour and red and white warpaint. They were obviously drunk, but not so that they no longer posed a threat.
He turned and scanned the line of pine trees that made up the forest behind where he lay.

“How long will it take us to return to camp?” he whispered. “Given no resistance.”

“About four hours, I would say, sir,” replied the man with the grey hair.

Four hours to retreat, and another four hours to come back with the rest of the men, but by then the sun would have risen, and the element of surprise would be lost.

Garath loathed the summer. The air was hot and sticky, and the nights short.

“Right.” Garath retreated from the edge, carefully got up onto his feet and let the man with the grey hair get ahead of him as they headed back into the forest whence they had come.

Stohl the scout was a short old man and looked thin even in his baggy tunic and unusually thick layer of leather. His trousers were ragged, and he wore tattered hide boots that seemed too heavy for him, and there was a line of hairlessness, a scar, that ran from the back of his head to the top of his left ear. But somehow Stohl navigated the winding labyrinth of the forest without breaking even a single sweat, and by the way he strode across the uneven ground not once searching for a foothold, Garath could tell that the man had crossed the forest many times before.

He waited until the two of them were far enough away from the enemy camp to speak. “Have you been doing this for a long time, Stohl? You seem to know these woods very well.”

“For as long as I can remember, sir. Perhaps even before you were born.”

“I turn twenty-eight next month.”

“Oh.”

“What is it?”

“You look… very youthful, sir.”

“You mean to say that I still look like a boy?”

“I wouldn’t say that.”

“I have always looked young. That is why I wear my hair tied at the back, to show the scar on my forehead.”

“Yes, yes.” The scout turned back and smiled without slowing. “People always take you more seriously if you are well-scarred, although they shouldn’t.”

“It could equally be a sign of either bravery or stupidity, but never both.”

“Yes indeed, sir.”

“And that is why I carry these also.” Garath reached into his tunic from the top and held up the pair of spectacles that hung on a thin chain around his neck. The legless steel frame and circular lenses glimmered under the moonlight leaking in between the pines.

The scout looked again and laughed.

ehhh. A backdrop of socioeconomic change and disruption that all comes across as a bit on the nose in terms of the conflict it's generating. There are also at least two too many PoVs, I think there are 5?, and out of the ones there I only really found Orso, and to a lesser degree Rikke, interesting.

Beyond industrialisation itself there isn't much tying all the disparate elements together either except for Joe contriving to the throw the characters together by the end, but even then it's mostly for the purposes of interpersonal drama rather than an overarching narrative.

If you like Joe in general though just read it. His style; sardonic tone, dark humour, whatever, is still there if that's your thing. Just with an extra helping of man bashing thrown in on top of everything else.

I'll be moving Author Consensus to the pastelink on the thread after the next thread, probably around Oct 1st, if there isn't activity by then and if anyone doesn't think it has value being in the OP.

sffglit2 will be removed from the OP next thread.

Starting next thread/tomorrow instead of doing "editions" there will be a series of 7 questions or polls per week, 1 for each day. The first won't be themed or voted upon, but most of the following will be. Since these threads have been lasting for ~2 days, there will be two questions or polls in the OP to discuss and vote on. I thought about linking a post to the OP for each day, but that would have far less visibility.

The voting will be from 20 possible themed choices. Each time one is picked another will be added. I wrote up 26 weeks worth, 182 questions last night, so if someone else wants them to do it as well if I stop doing this or for whatever reason, that anon would be able to do so.

So a little hatred is weak, bit poorly written in parts, satire/political critique is too on the nose, characters are less interesting than the previous trilogy, which is a problem as the plot is fairly simple and steady, with a few set pieces, so the characters do a lot of work to make stuff interesting. To be honest the plot ends about two thirds in, and the rest is unfortunately weak soap opera. Compared to the standalone stuff, this is worse. At least they forced an ending and considered arcs. Disappointed to an extent, but I can't say the quality of writing took a dive, it's always been a bit iffy.

The capitalists are all Victorian mill owners from Dickens novels. The socialists are all murderous revolutionaries, yet Joe expects is to take the world seriously as opposed to comically. (I know he puts jokes in, but theyre never at the expense of world-building) All the characters whatever their pov are all too cynical to buy into any system they're part of, even if they're part of it, so every characters point of view feels a bit like listening to a 14 year old complain about what a 14 year olds idea of how the world works is.

Also, he brings up refugees as a theme but doesn't give it enough thought or space in the book, beyond criticising racism, so it just comes across as 'woke', whereas I think his adding of some more female perspectives and characters was handled far better, and the book is better for it.

I mean that's harsh, I did enjoy the book, but, you know, criticism.

Also, it's a bit of blue balls really, because after the twists of the last books ending, you expect more than what is essentially a reboot of the blade itself, with new versions of the old characters. They have the new young arrogant prince, now split into two characters, where one gets the charm and the other gets the plot, the new angry fighter who makes no choices for himself the whole book, to the point that it's funny, then the new cynical torturer, who is now a tortured woman, then you throw in the rich socialite because you realise that you need the audience to sympathise with everybody, or it won't be gritty and real, and a magic girl, because you need to still be sold in the fantasy section.

Well I dunno, I just disagree with the reviews and it annoyed me to where I needed to vent. I struggle finding good fantasy books, because the reviews are so surface level. I think so much of what's written in the genre is dross that just the idea of ignoring clichés and writing about something interesting ( like sex, racism, capitalism), even badly, is enough to warrant a good review. No review I've seen asks whether it was handled well. Or analyses his repetitive descriptive language, or anything really, beyond how modern it is for not being overblown sexist, fantasy shit, which admittedly makes it good compared to most fantasy, but still just an okay book.

I get what you are saying, in regard that the most reviewers are retards who will disregard book shortcomings if said book is in any way woke, but then you went about sexism and how writing about race and sex is interesting, and its not, at least for me, i read about that crap in other genres, fantasy for me is escapism from that shit.

To get recs? Duh.
There was a anon who used to post the reviews of books he read in the general, then he stopped a few years ago. This general is full of speedreading readlets and memers that don't even read.
You think you will hold a proper conversation with anyone here about books you read? I mean if it's some pol book, then the readlets would probably jump in to fill the thread up with discussion.

Why do I feel you are the cosmerefag, who is also a one piece of shit fan, who also likes cooking, who also likes Revelation Space and is mad no one wants to discuss it with him?

If you're really bored and just want to read some comfy stuff in a universe you already know go for it. I actually enjoyed the other first law stuff, but this was quite meh too me. Lots of different POVs, lots of pages wasted doing nothing, no good new characters (Outside Rikke maybe).

I literally have no idea what any of those things mean. I just come here like once a month to get recommendations and then come back after I'm done reading what people here recommended.
Currently looking into the titles I've been recommended this time.

Too many tried and gave up. It's why I use goodreads. I get zero response unless it's something popular, or the memers are feeling like calling the author a hack for a day or two.

Children of Hurin and Book of Lost Tales are definitely worth reading, haven't read lays of beleriand

Seems the best way to get people discussing is to discuss what a lot of people are going to be reading anyway and then convince others to read it as well.

Leo is the primary racist and also the one who is loved by basically everyone. Next book will have Leo going full 1488 and cleaning out all the refugees, just you wait.

Ah fuck, you're right.

It was 'hinted at' when he said exactly what he thought about brown people so the author, oh wait sorry, so Orso could say racism was wrong.

I was just thinking how lonely it feels to hate a book.

Yeah the book felt pretty enlightened centrism tier to me. Also I feel like he forgot we already knew about Savines dad, which made the whole dynamic between her and orso completely uninteresting. There's also nothing at all that I'd be curious for in the next book at all. Logen coming as lamb from rikkes vision could only thing be remotely decent

It seems to me that Leo is getting set up for a northern independence plot or at least something that will pit him against the crown. I expect him to have some success but eventually get BTFO, he is full of hubris and arrogance so it seems that at some point or another it will blow up in his face. Orso seems like the sort of character where things will probably go quite poorly for him but will miraculously land on his feet. Surely the end of this series is the demise of Bayaz, I felt like the conflict between him and Khalul and whatever happened ages past was the ultimate premise of the story and it would be disappointing if it was never actually addressed or resolved on the page.

The lamb thing is obvious. Orso sevine relationship reveal went like this for me.

Well they can't stay together this is Abercrombie.
Oh don't tell me it's incest, please don't tell me it's incest
Incest. Oh that's so game of thrones tier shock value
Oh wait it's not even a proper suprise, I just forgot because that last book took 100 pages to decelerate to an ending.

Damn anyone here actually read this book and wants to talk about it? I was literally gonna ask if anyone's read it and would wanna talk about it instead of just give me reasons they won't.

This book fucked me up. I absolutely despised the characters, narrator, and writing style when I started it so it really surprised me how much I loved it by only, like, the halfway point. Just finished it last night and the ending totally undid me.

I need to go back to reading actually good SF to get this off my mind. Has anyone read Fifth Head of Cerberus by Wolfe? That's next on my list but I'm tempted to slip into more Vorkosigan saga. My indecision has led to me wasting a day on some dutch medieval novel that was really good but which I probably will not actually finish.

/sffg/, I'm just so fucking sick of this. I want to be a writer, but the writing urge is completely gone. Not only do I not have the will to write, I don't even have the will to plan anymore. All I can do is hate myself for letting my life slip away through my fingers without even fighting for it. I have so many stories I need to write but all of them are vanishing into the recesses of my consciousness as apathy erases my consciousness. If I keep going through this I'm soon going to reach a point where I've abandoned my dreams entirely and no purpose to exist besides vapid, stupid, pointless pleasure.

Dammit! Free me or let me die!

take your pick. I have depression, general anxiety, panic disorder, aspergers, bipolar disorder, hypochondria, at least two phobias with a third that's since been cured, a mentality that leaves me hypersusceptible to psychosomatic illness.

The sad part is therapy is only making this worse. Before I started therapy I at least had the desire to create and tinker with stories. now it's just fucking gone and instead of caring, all I can do is care that I don't care. It's horrible
