What are some good novels where the protagonist is an artist or where the visual arts are very prominent?

>Difference and Repetition
Gogol's Nevsky Prospekt has an artist protagonist and themes of how he creates a perfect world (not through painting but dreaming) as escapism. It's excellent—Gogol's prose is consistently divine.

Unironically a lot of Balzac's novels. Balzac was found of painting and a lt of his description are basically attempts at painting with words.

Thanks, bro. I love Gogol and this one seems to have slipped by my readings.

Is it actually good? I'm currently doing my Master's dissertation on Wittgenstein and have often wondered whether to read this book or not.

I thought it was a good book, unlike any other I've read. I don't know much about wittgenstein's philosophy though. He's not mentioned, or just briefly mentioned in the book.
It's about loneliness and memory, art and history, and language.

It is indeed an awesome avenue, even today with its droves of tourists. I've walked all along Nevsky and its transversal streets, small canals, churches, dead ends, stores and cafés. Russia is awesome, man.
