Who are some other writers like Lermontov? Or books like A Hero of Our Time? Looking for dark Byronic figures not written by w*men or as Dumas-esque caricatures

to OP, I seriously can't think of another book like Hero of our times. Pushkin has some poetry that is similar to Lermontov's poetry, and they had kind of similar lives but that's not really what you're after I don't think.

Don't expect high art, but they're neat little character studies of Bond. Casino Royale was arguably the best book and was originally intended to be a stand alone thing.
