FROM TIME TO TIME I STILL POST RUSSIAN /LIT/ THREADS, FOR EXAMPLE I'M READING WAR AND PEACE NOW. THERE WAS A TIME WHEN I THOUGHT I'D PUMPED THROUGH A SHITLOAD OF NOVELLAS, BUT /LIT/ AND MY OWN SEARCHES PROVED THAT THERE'S STILL SO MANY THAT I'M YET TO CHECK OUT! BUT IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO DIVERSIFY A BIT, LIKE CHECKING OUT OTHER AUTHORS I LIKE (HEMINGWAY, STEINBECK, KAWABATA, CAMUS ETC.) AND FROM TIME TO TIME LONGER WORKS FROM THE RUSSIAN AUTHORS I ENJOY, WHICH IS WHY I'M GOING TO FOLLOW THE EPIC WAR AND PEACE WITH SOLZHENITSYN'S 'IN THE FIRST CIRCLE', WHICH IS QUITE LONG TOO (HAVEN'T READ ANYTHING BY HIM IN AGES, HE DESERVES A REVISIT)

I just finished The Count earlier today. I didn't like how Danglars got off easy, and I also didn't like the contrived take-a-pill-that-makes-you-look-like-you-are-dead device, which has been used everywhere from Romeo and Juliet to the Wolverine film. And the circumstances in R+J were remarkably similar.
I just started on Life and Fate. It felt good to understand the first little bit of french in the book - I couldn't do that when I read War and Peace.

>> No.1378299

>>1378279
DESPITE THE LENGTH, IT WAS AN ENJOYABLE AND BREEZY READ, WHICH WAS GOOD AS I READ IT DURING MY FINALS AND FLIGHT TO JAPAN. I AM ALSO UNDER THE SAME VIEWPOINT AS SEXY JOHN, IN REGARDS TO DANGLER'S FATE.

>>1378286
IT'LL MAKE FOR A QUICK READ, BUT I APOLOGISE IF THE ANTI-SEMITISM THROUGHOUT THE NOVEL BOTHERS YOU, THE AUTHOR HIMSELF WAS JEWISH, SO IT'S EXPECTED I SUPPOSE. STILL, IT MAKES FOR AN AMAZING READ, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE INTERESTED ABOUT STALINGRAD AND THE TREATMENT OF INTELLECTUALS IN THE USSR BEFORE AND DURING WORLD WAR II.

ALSO, THE HISTORY OF THE BOOK IS INTERESTING, IT WAS PICKED UP BY THE KGB, BUT ONE OF THE COPIES WAS USED TO PUT THE ENTIRE NOVEL ONTO MICROFILM AND SMUGGLED OUT OF THE USSR, TO THE WEST.

>> No.1378310

BY THE WAY SEXY JOHN, IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, WOULD YOU LIKE TO READ IN THE FIRST CIRCLE TOGETHER? I BELIEVE YOU'RE BUSIER THAN ME, WITH LESS TIME TO READ, BUT WAR AND PEACE IS CONSIDERABLY LONGER, SO WE MAY END UP FINISHING AROUND THE SAME TIME.

IF I DO FINISH EARLIER, I'LL JUST READ SOME NOVELLAS OR SOMETHING UNTIL YOU'RE READY WITH A COPY. BUT IF YOU'VE ALREADY READ IT, NO PROBLEM!

>Go to Borders.
>Nervous as fuck, sweating profusely from my palms and armpits.
>Find A Song of Fire and Ice, clutch it tightly to my chest.
>Wait in line, have several small panic attacks.
>Finally my turn, hand book to cashier, which is at this point dripping wet from my clammy hands
>Cute cashier looks at the book, looks at my pit stains and sweaty brow, and stifles a laugh. She can't stop laughing.
>Run out of the store after paying with a moist $20.
>Sweat starts pouring out of my eyes in the parking lot. A family walking by pretends they don't see.

shit, I work there and my advice to everyone who tries to buy one of our overpriced books is, "hey, there's a Half Price Books & Music right down the street. You'll get this 35 dollar book for probably 3 bucks there."

Fuck Borders. They start you out at minimum wage even though it's impossible to find a single item in the store that costs less than $7.75 (minimum wage where I live)

If it makes you feel any better, I took all my books I received as Christmas gifts that never got read, and donated them to a local college to raise funds for a scholarship, and what they didn't take I donated to the library. Someone will read them eventually. :3
