The entire tone of the book is pointing to Camus' absurdist philosophy-- that there is no ultimate meaning behind anything we do. Mersault is what happens when you realize just how cold and unfeeling the meaningless universe is. You only act-- you are unable to find meaning in doing anything. It's all just sense and inclination-- never meaning.
