Nothing that I would recommend. While there was quite a few attempts at trying to place vampires in the future, most of those fell short either by offering some mundane explanation for their existence (a genetic quirk, as in >>13764396's Blindopraxia, a viral infection or even more exotic explanations) or making them some sort of supped up zombies. In both cases the end result is taking away from their mystique, making them far less interesting.
You could try Children of the Night by Dan Simmons. It has the problems I outlined above but it's well written.

The gems are few, that's why they are priceless. Most current sci-fi is shit: shitty romances and completely ordinary affairs but in the future, or in a spaceship, or with AI, or with dna engineering. Few books have something novel to contribute.

>What type of poison did a bunch of Jades (at best) have access to that could harm a Sage?
They did have some nice stuff that they found on the caverns and such. They could also have traded with the outside. We don't know which iron body the sage had, and it is my understanding that most people don't have poison resistance, even those on high advancement levels.

Jades don't have access to anything that would harm a Sage. Sacred Valley doesn't have relations with the "outside"; the only person that could possibly even be aware of the outside is Elder Whisper and maaaaybe some of the top clan elders. You're also forgetting that the body is completed reforged with Soulfire upon transition to the Lord level. No common basic bitch poison is going to harm a SAGE.

I only read a few pages then skimmed and did some keyword searches.
These are not full reviews and may not be representative or accurate.
With every prologue I read I believe more strongly that most prologues just shouldn't be used.
There's no apparent reason to me why most of these couldn't be published by an actual publisher.
The image of this post are the self-published novels described.

Estimated chance I'd enjoy reading it all
4 = Good (61-100%)
3 = Decent (40-60%)
2 = Mediocre (21-39%)
1 = Bad (0-20%)

Total: 16
(1) = 1
(2) = 6
(3) = 5
(4) = 4

Total: 16
Not actually self-published: 4
They're all some sort of Fantasy.

(1) Andrew Seiple - Threadbare
>>13756005

(2) Graham Austin-King - Faithless
Boy sold into slavery to work the mines for the priests of the Forgefather.
>fifteen year old boy..."Bit old for the priest's taste wouldn't you say?"
>You can pass through three miles of natural caves and tunnels and suddenly reach stairs like these, or one of the bridges further down.
>What do you mean there was a soulwraith?

(2) John Bierce - Into the Labyrinth
I couldn't help but unfavorably compare this to other magic school works I've read.
Author's note: contact me on reddit!
I've included this to antagonize those overly concerned with tribalism.
>Mages weren't ever born in Emblin, and yet Hugh had been.
>First, visualize the spellforms, the invisible geometric diagrams you were supposed to envision to cast a spell
>The teacher made Hugh try six more times in front of the class before she finally gave up

(2) Alec Hutson - The Crimson Queen
Based on the cover I thought this was a Forgotten Realms book since it looks so similar.
Boy from a fishing village is swept up in adventure.
>"I have no master", murmured the Undying One. Then his thin mouth quirked slightly. "And who said I was a man?"
>Fourteen books...he'd finished each one two-dozen times...there were no other books in the village...he would be surprised if anyone else could read
>an eye bigger than a wagon wheel had slid open in the blackness and found him, flensed his soul open like with a boning knife and peered into his depths...He had seen a Deep One. And it had seen him.

(2) Rob J. Hayes - The Heresy Within
Orginally self-published then published by Ragnarok Publications.
>The Arbiter took a deep breath. "NOW I CLEANSE THESE UNHOLY BODIES." His voice rang out with unnatural. "BY FIRE BE CLEANSED!"
>If the huge tits were cowed by her stare, they didn't show it
>putting it up the serving girl's ample arse
>"wouldn't it be nice ta bend her over an' shove it up her arse so hard she screams?"
>"You were raping the the daughter while we were killing the father?"
>He kissed her cunt before sticking his cock in
>He raped boys and girls alike and slit their throats after to bathe in their blood as to keep himself young.
>petite girl with big brown eyes, and long blonde hair that flowed down to her arse...didn't look old enough to bleed...dress was transparent...tiny budding breasts

>> No.13765503

(2) Rob J. Hayes - Where Loyalties Lie
>"It may be you're missing the point behind pirating. We're looking to take what ain't ours and what can be sold for a profit. Ain't no profit in taking lives, far as I can see. They don't tend to be worth much after the taking."
>"No," she said in her honeyed voice..."If any of your crew so much as touches me, I will kill them and ten more."
>"The Kraken's Maw is something far more dangerous. It's the one and only gateway to the court of Rin."
>"Have you finally managed to grow a cock that would have matched your sister's balls?"
>"That fucking piece of shit pretend fucking pirate cunt running off to suck on their black fucking cock leaving us to fucking die. Fuck!"
>eyes unfocused and blood leaking down over her face...he thrust his cock up her arse...if [his daughter] wasn't strong enough to stop the man from fucking her, then she deserved it

(2) Cameron Johnston - The Traitor God
Not self-published
https://hippogriff.wordpress.com/2018/02/14/interview-with-cameron-johnston/
>I would definitely have considered self-publishing if The Traitor God had not been snapped up by a publisher.
Writing in 1st person seems to go wrong and badly much more easily.
>He launched himself forward, jaw clamping down on my crotch. Shitshitshitshit...nobody had tried to bite my cock off before!
>This town was already dooomed and I wasn't going down with it. Heroism could get a man killed.
>fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck
>The streets were dead; not just quiet, actually dead. Corpses of cats and dogs and chick and swine lay evisecerated and drained of blood, piles of feather and bone marking where the god had plucked birds from the sky.
> I had bathed in the blood of gods, and my power was growing.

(3) Will Wight - Unsouled
>>13756005

(3) M.D. Presley - The Woven Ring
An alternate world US Civil War. Female protagonist was a soldier for Newfield. Chapters alternate between past and present.
It felt really strange reading what little that I read. It was like the reading version of uncanny valley.
>Two weeks past his home state of Karlwych seceded from Newfield, the states Meskon, Rhea, and Mimas soon joining Karlwych to form their own country: the Covenant.
>President Ruhl did his best to ensure the matter was settled as he preached his peace between the two factions.
>Marta did not know if she had any forgiveness left within her, all her kindness burned away by the grand war.

(3) Craig Schaefer - Winter's Reach
Seems like roughly like Italy during Renaissance and/or the Papal States. Probably references to the Medici.
>You're twenty-three, well past your prime for marriage...People are starting to talk
>The Banco Marchetti has the contract for the papal alum mines...the market is as good as theirs.
>His gave way to sudden heat as warm lips pressed against his, hands stroking his shoulders and curling in his hair. He wrapped his arms around the woman's waist and pulled her close.

>> No.13765513

(3) Chris Wooding - The Ember Blade
Not self-published.
Standard coming-of-age heroic epic fantasy.
Very slow-paced and mostly about worldbuilding that has little to do with the plot.
The kind of novel that would be for hardcore fans of its main series, except it is the main book.
About a revolution against the imperial forces that conquered their lands decades ago.
In theory it's something I would like, but seems doubtful.
>Their act of defiance was to be the spark that would ignite the fire of rebellion in their people.
>'Find yourself a nice Ossian girl' ...'I know you love her, but it will pass. My sister's not for you.'
>He did as his ma told him, laying out bowls, spoons, and leather drinking jacks.

(3) Luke Matthews - Construct
I think "construct" is rather blah and should have just went with golem. Incon, Intelligent Construct, is even dumber.
Alternate titles: A Golem's Journey / A Golem's Second Life
>it bore an extra finger opposing its thumb than the three that adorned his. His own hand was worked metal of burnt orange, like armor of copper or bronze
>Searching for any memories that would help him discern where -- or what -- he was, he found only a yawning void. Even his own name eluded him.
>his body was a collection of metal plates plates in various hues of gold and orange and brown...some were stained green with age but he found almost no signs of rust

(4) J. Zachary Pike - Orconomics: A Satire
>>13756005

(4) Michael R. Fletcher - Beyond Redemption
Not self-published.
Author's note: This is a novel of manifest delusion.
I'll have to this think one over, but I certainly can understand how a large number of people could potentially like this.
>How could such a self-centered mudering bastard look so heroically perfect? Truly the gods were twisted.
>Belief defines reality...I believe I will be the Greatest Swordsman in the World
>Perception is reality...to a Gefahrgeist, this truth was everything

(4) Peter McLean - Priest of Bones
Not self-published.
The most likely of any of these that I'd actually read it all and enjoy it a lot.
>He was drunk, though, not booze drunk but rape drunk, power drunk, and I knew this time he wasn't going to take a telling. Not this time.
>Our regiment had gone from being three thousand paid, organized murderers to three thousand unpaid, disorganized murderers.
>The country is on its fucking knees. There's plague. There's famine. There's no fucking working. And we won this fucking war?

(4) Michael McClung - The Thief Who Pulled on Trouble's Braids
Female protagonist.
Almost makes me what to read it just to see how it'll go in this particular case, and I may yet.
>"If you bring me trouble, I'll have your balls."
>"Nice robe," he said with that silky voice of his, but I could tell his heart wasn't in it. I pulled my wrap tighter, and he chuckled.
>As always, when the tired come-ons had no effect, they turned to jeers and catcalls.

The image of this post are the web novels described.
I'm apparently not included in the target audience for these in the slightest.
Probably most for teens looking for an easily disgestible read that can be binged or read on a schedule and don't read much else.
These are so awful that I wanted to minimize the time I spent doing this, so no prose provided.
I probably shouldn't have even looked at them at all.
I'd much rather actually read the average post in the critique thread.
If you really feel the need, you'll just have to look at them yourself.
I think one of the defining traits of a typical web novel seems to focus on dialogue, regardless of how poorly written, above all else and sometimes to the exclusion of all else. Basically like comics/manga without the images or like a text message novel.
One would hope they'd improve after writing millions of words, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Web novels are the modern pulp in terms of quality, if not worse. Maybe penny dreadful or dime novel would be more accurate.
Don't take the ratings too seriously, because it ought to all be avoided.
I have severe doubts that anything on RoyalRoad would be worthwhile.
I had rated about half of them and then realized it was pointless because after a certain point they became indistinguisbaly bad.

4 = Kýrie eléēson
3 = Eloi Eloi lama sabachthani?
2 = mors mihi lucrum
1 = Komm, süßer Tod, komm selge Ruh

And so ends my "rating" of charts.

I just read pic related and the book two, I hardly ever read fantasy but this was highly recommended. The problem is the books were great but I feel that fantasy genre is for brainlets(or makes intelligent people into brainlets), I am a stem student and while I enjoyed this it didnt really introduce me to any new concepts and didnt make me think and imagine new things and possibilities, it was just swords, battles, some magic, it was good entertainment but after reading it I realize my mind has starved and withered (a little) by not being exposed to science for several days.

As far as charts go, this one is particularly bad because it pretends to be something that it isn't.
It's not quite a troll chart, but it is a "people wouldn't otherwise look at several of these, but if I include others that are more acceptable they may be tricked into looking at the others."

Read the second one, glad to see less space-bullshit, not glad to see the pattern of skimming over all sorts of potentially interesting settings to immediately jump right to the finish line. A xiaxia could make a thousand chapters out of each location, instead it's like reading a tourist's guide, sometimes LITERALLY. Or the "mysterious master" saving everyone. Will this endlessly repeat, each new book just another step on a treadmill and a new character tacked on at the front of the pack? I also don't like how every problem and solution is either offscreened, papered over, or ignored.

Currently, our main party is a bag of retarded rats sliding down a greased slope, inevitably progressing through no fault or design of their own. All the struggling that happens seems shallow and tacked on at best.

Still somewhat interesting, potential for improvement is still there, characters are vaguely amusing.

I miss being able to assume that there was a quality barrier in place for books. Self-published books - saturated with 5 star reviews despite the author having horrid prose - fill the Amazon and B&N websites. For a while, the brick and mortar stores (at least around me) were still free of them, but recently there has been a big influx of them into my local store. I don't know where to look for actually well-written books anymore. I know I'm autistic, but having well-polished prose is something I value highly, regardless of genre, and self-published stories usually have the bare minimum of effort put into them in that regard. I simply don't know where to look anymore.

Finally finished this. You can tell Gibson spent a lot of time rewriting the first half of the book, but the ending really shits itself with that Coda chapter. Thought the overall plot was actually ok (but hard to follow) but...
>why did Molly just fuck off
>what did the ninja star represent?
>what the hell is the purpose of this new Matrix? Seems lazy
>what was with the three figures at the end?

Personally. I could have done without this chapter. Maybe just a vague chapter of case in the hotel, but felt really lazy to wrap up the story so quick. That being said, still a good example of cyberpunk. Hard to believe it was written so long ago, really appreciated the world that was painted.

I'm ADHD as fuck and can pretty much only consume books as audio while I'm doing something else. That said, probably because my mind is always all over the place, I've never had a problem retaining audiobooks and in fact retain them better than text because as long as I'm occupied with something else my mind rarely wanders. Also I'm an electrical engineer, so I'm inclined to believe my IQ plays some part in not only my sporadic attention span, but the ability to process so much information efficiently.

I understand that this isn't the case for everyone.

That was more or less my experience as well. The beginning made a lot of sense and the novel peaked during the heist at the research center and dragged from there. Then they ended up spending about 60% of the book on that rastafarian space station and it lost me in places. The prose was a little esoteric by modern standards and it probably wasn't helped that I read it all in one sitting.

Yeah, the rasta shit really just dragged me into the dirt. Kind of tabled it for a week until the turing police showed up then felt like it got more interesting again. I enjoyed the fact that Wintermute was crazy, but I don't understand why Neuromancer tried to stop the merger still. Hardwired to do so?

As a 25 year old zoomer now though, I really was fascinated by the perception of technology represented in this book. I've posted about it before, but I think that's why I enjoy older science fiction. It's a TRUE look on how society felt about the changes in technology. I just don't think you can capture that w/ nonfiction, because good science fiction is a product of the culture and times. I see a few reviews claim that it seems dated, but I definitely disagree. It's the nuances of AI that really bring it to life for me. Fascinating book, really. Just found out that maybe he was setting up more books in this Sprawl universe, but otherwise I'm pretty pleased with this one. I found it interesting that surveillance wasn't a central theme of the book, on the topic of historical relevance. I don't know of any current works of SF, but if I had to write something like that, I'm sure that'd be a major topic. I'm too brainlet to imagine the future of technology however

I prefer reading to listening, but I've never had retention issues with audiobooks. Then again whenever I was a subject in a memory or processing related study back in university—quite often bc you got nice rewards for it—I was some sort of freakish outlier. So I'm not sure my experience w/ audiobooks really aligns with the average listener's. The answer is most likely yes, but don't let anyone tell you want to do. Because at the end of the day, if you aren't enjoying what you are writing, it will almost always turn out shit.

Just understand it's a totally different beast. Longest thing I've written was around 250,000 and it takes quite a bit of determination to stay on track. Any break from writing longer than maybe three days will completely obliterate your character consistency unless you take religious notes, and since epics are constantly jumping between characters and scenes, you're pretty much always fumbling to remember how you wrote a particular thing when you return to it like 100k words later. My biggest piece of advice is simply stay focused.
