I enjoyed Illuminatus!, it's very entertaining. It styles itself after more serious experimental writing but is unchallenging, Count of Monte Cristo tier light reading. Lots of fun 60s type talk, alludes to a lot of writers and counterculture figures (Burroughs' influence especially being thrown in sharp relief). Pretty funny too. I liked Cosmic Trigger a bit less: I feel that RAW is very uncritical and isn't very self-conscious, whatever his claims of radical skepticism, and while this lends color to his fiction, his non-fiction suffers for it. I have the same feeling with McKenna, but to a much lesser degree, and I enjoyed True Hallucinations partly because I could read it as a narrative rather than a series of claims. He's also just a better (or prettier) speaker and writer, I think. I'll look into The Archaic Revival. Have you read Food of the Gods? It seems to be his best known, and I haven't read it yet.

Archaic Revival is like that. It's a compilation of interviews and essays by McKenna. You have to read it more as theories than claims obviously. He goes into novelty theory for a chapter which you can definitely skip. Haven't read Food of the Gods, I don't find it particularly appealing as it's mostly on shrooms.

>The Sailor who fell from Grace with the Sea
Great book - if not degenerate - but I wouldn't keep it on my shelf you uncultured swine. Great ending also.

>A clockwork Orange
Literally why? I tried reading it and it was just such a nothing. It's only famous because of Kubrick and Burgess himself was angry that out of all his books this one which wasn't even near his best work became his most famous. And it's not like it was difficult you could follow it fairly easily even if you didn't know the words purely intuitively.

Do yourself a favour and skip Man and his Symbols, I found it to be a horrible summing up of Jungian theory and just made it seem as if it were a toy shop. You might as well read it I guess but should definitely read Modern Man in search of a Soul as the primary introduction.

Some visits I find nothing, but other times I'm overwhelmed. For the price of one new book, I get a dozen interesting ones (and usually in great shape). I'm very lucky, though. In an average week I check out two nearby library bookstores, two nearby thrift stores, get free books from publishers, and pick up a few that other profs have left on the department shelves to give away (I teach at two universities). Add in purchases from used bookstores and amazon, and I'm a happy book magnet.

No, unless you live in a big city all you have at hand is a state owned bookstore called "the academic bookstore" and all they supply you with is "approved" litterature. In Sweden there is also only one publisher making sure that mist books printed in swedish cost about $30 each.
